1987 celica gt problems

I have a 1987 Toyota Celica, with the 3s fe engine, and a manual transmission, the problem I have is it idles pretty good, but when you give it gas, out of gear it will either rev up fine, or drop to about 5 rpm, and if you put it in gear, and go to move it, 9 times out of 10 the rpm will completely drop and the car will die, I have put a new fuel pump, feul filter, plugs, timing belt, alternator belt on it, theres no muffler at all, and the cat converter has been replaced with a straight pipe, any help would be much appreciated, thank you

edit: i re read ur post and realized it said OUT OF GEAR, if so, is it throwing codes or no? what coclor exhaust comes out? does it smell pig rich or does it smell not alot like exhuast and more like air?

check your vacc lines to, one could be off and causing all this

I don't know about the codes, because I can't get my mechanic friend to bring his computer tester down because hes lazy as... well you get the point, and the smoke when you get on it and it revs, is white, when I bought the car I did what repairs needed to be done at the time(the afformentioned parts replaced) and I took it for a test drive, it ran perfect for 2 days, except for the throttle cable snapping, then it started to lurch really badly, then it quit driving altogether, which vac lines should I check? the ones comeing from the intake seem to be perfeclty fine

chekc all of them, do you know if your getting proper amounts of fuel?

I don't know if its throwing codes, the check engine light comes on when it dies, so I would guess it is, but I can't get it anywhere to get it put on a computer tester

and as for the gas, yes its getting alot of gas into the engine, the injectors aren't bad either, and I've gone through the expense of buying one of the most expensive parts for this car, the mass air flow sensor, when I can't really afford, it didn't help any either

ok I went to a mechanic, towed it up there, and had the computer looked at, and there is a fairly good list of stuff thats coming up to set off codes heres what all is wrong

mass air flow sensor bad
O2 sensor maybe bad
exhaust leak, could cause false readings on O2 sensor
throttle needs adjusting on throttle body
sensor opposite throttle on throttle body needs adjusting
sensor that tells the computer how fast the car is going either needs adjusting or is bad, but speedo reads right

I hope these repairs work, due to that I need this car next week due to the fact that gas prices are 4.15 a gallon and that means just turning the key in my truck costs me 4.15, it sucks, and theres only 3 stations within a 50 mile radius that have gas anymore

ok I replaced everything the computer told me to, and nothing, its still doing it, it will idle but sputters while idling, you give it gas and it bogs down and tries to die, and this is all in nuetral, if you put it in gear it dies as soon as you give it gas, any ideas of what it could be? it doesn't seem to be throwing codes this time

id replace the o2 sensor if you havnt done that, seems like its giving fuel and not giving any air, check to make your your maf sensor is any godd and see if your actually geting air into the engine

when he hooked it up...what were your a/f readings?

were messing with it now, its hooked to a comp tester but no codes, it has a new o2 sensor, and the maf sensor is good, but still nothing

tahts really odd, take off your intake and start the car, when you give it gas w the intake off listen and try to hear if air is being sucked in, if its not post back here

we think we figured it out, and its basicly the most expensive part, next to buying a whole new car, that you can buy, the errors we got pertained to every sensor, "so and so sensor not reading to ecu" so we think its the ecu

the ecu? no I never replaced it, its a $500 part, so I'm hoping to get one from ebay or a junk yard

ok I have hit a bit of a snag, my shop manual does not show where the ecu(computer) is located, so I figured it was under the carpet on the passenger side, not there, not behind the kick panel either, its also not under the dash, where is this stupid ECU supposed to be? so that I can pull it out and replace it, please help me

ok I priced a new and a refurbished, as well as one from a junkyard for a computer, prices range from $200 to a little over $500 none of which I can afford, so for the time being I'm giving up on the toyota celica, and I'm going to see about getting a new car

neither are right, I don't have the cash to buy one unless its under $50, the numbers on mine are completely different to the ones on e-bay

Is yours a 5 speed or an auto? The ECU for an automatic tranny should work for both but the ecu for a manual won't work with a automatic. that could be why the numbers are different. U do have a 3SFE right?

I think celicas only came with 2 different engines in 87 *(GT\3SFE)(GTS\3SGE).

87's only came with the 3s fe, and its a manual 5 speed, the automatic one won't work, I work for more or less, toyota, and the computer won't work I've had them check
