Just bought a 88 chevy 2500 4x4. well thing runs and drives great but the gas gauge is pegged all the way and the odometer doesnt work so i have no clue as to how much gas i have in the tank. also the truck was turned to carb and has a fuel pump in the engine bay. any ideas how to fix this.

When it was switched over to a mechanical pump my guess is that they disconnected the harness to the fuel pump and fuel sending unit. I would drop the gas tank and inspect the wiring inside the the tank before hooking it back up if it is indeed unplugged. Obviously a spark from a wire shorting out in the tank would not be a good thing.

Oh, and about your odometer. you have to pull the instrument cluster and take a look. On my 88' K1500 the black gear cracked. I glued it back together but it still doesn't work. I think the little electric motor that turns everything lost it's mojo. Do a search on for odometer, theres quite a bit of info written up about it.
