started out with a 87 bronco II, Then an 89 sunbird LE. Now instead of pretending to be fast in those 2 i just bought an 88 GTA trans am. love at first sight. 350cid TPI with an aftermarket 3" exhaust and a performance chip. im just woundering if i got any problems with a car like this to look forward too? and is there anyways to cure the rough shocks of the trans am?

Its a heavy car, on smooth roads its a joy, but yes it can be no fun if the roads are bad...

Go over the car fully and see what it needs the most...
Good luck/skill!

you'll have idiots in hondas with those "pep boy's special" wings (you know- the ones that magically add 50 hp to their cars) try and street race you, you may have more attention from police, especially if the car is red and you will definitely enjoy getting from "a" to "b" much more than you did before.

Don't wash the engine down with a hose/ power washer as there are supposedly sensative electronics on the tuned port engines that don't like to get wet.

Also- follow up on the current car craft magazines. They're working on a formula with tpi and are going over some common areas of repair nad upgrades for this type of car. your engine would apply.

Other than that, have fun driving it!

Fortunatly the GTA is black, so if i need to i can turn off my lights and become close to invisible to the cops if i gatta hide at night. As for ricers wanting to race me, i wont be worried. that thing is fast as sin. Is their any way to smooth out the ride, new shocks, adjustments? its like riding on a cloud until i hit about 130km and i aint in heaven no more. i dont know how to post a pic so il upload one into my personal photo gallery

You can put new shocks on i dought i will help, thos cars a made for PERFORMANCE high speeds and cornering, not touring around the countryside, you'll just have to live with it, I know my camaro is the same way, thats why i don't use it as my every day driver. Thos are sweet cars dude and getting harder to finde so take care of it

If you're having ride issues at high speed, you may want to have a look at your rims and make sure none of them are bent. Also, the tires may be out of balance slightly or cheap quality. If they all check out, new shocks may help only if the ones on there now have locked up and are riding stiffer than stock. Otherwise, thats the way are they supposed to ride. I kind of like being able to tell if the quarter is heads or tails when I drive over it...

You could try going to monotube shocks in the rear and comparable struts in the front. You could also check into progressive or variable rate springs. Just remember that it's a performance car and will never give you the ride of something like a cadillac.

the tires were of cheap quality and close to being worn out. I just had them replaced and it rides better. now i gatta start on some body work though, does anyone know where i can snag a set of black rust free doors for an 87-89 trans am, preferably gta? id cut out the rust and fix it myself but the passenger side door is pretty deep
