1998 Jimmy - ABS Light on Intermittantly

About 6 months ago or so, I purchased a used 1998 Jimmy. Shortly after I got it, the ABS light started to come on sporadically. It used to just be when I first started it up for the day, or after being parked for an extended period of time, but since then it goes on and off fairly frequently. If I drive it for a short distance, I can get the light to go off if I press the brake pedal as far as it will go, then the ABS light goes off and the brake warning flashes up for a split second and that's it.
I took it to the dealership a while back and they said that my "front left wheel speed sensor" was going out. They said it would be $75 for a new one, plus $100-150 for labor. I called around to all the parts stores, and firstly, none of them had heard of a "wheel speed sensor," but a few told me that it was probably the ABS sensor, so first off - does that sound right?
Secondly, everywhere I have called told me that it is a dealer-only part, so I have to pay the $75. However, we have always done all of our own automotive work, so is this something I can fix myself if I just buy the part? Where's a good place to find information on replacing one of these sensors?
Never had to work with an ABS sensor before, so any help is greatly appreciated - thanks!

Try cleaning the sensor first before replacing it.

If you do need a new sensor, you can buy gm parts online. www.gmpartsdirect.com is one of many places where you can get gm parts online.

On 98-current the ABS sensor is integrated into the hub bearing you can not just change the sensor, the entire hub assembly needs to be swapped out. They run about $140.00 at most part stores. They are NOT dealer items only.
On 97 and below, the ABS sensor is integrated into the dust shield which can also be bought at a parts store. They average around 90 bux.
You can do the job yourself with the following tools
18mm box wrench
Hammer
36mm socket
Torque wrench
needle nose pliers.
Will take about an hour and a half for someone who hasn't done it before.
Remove wheel
Follow the abs wire coming from the hub bearing to the frame and disconnect it.
Remove the cotter pin w/ needle nose pliers
Loosen axel nut so that it is flush with the end of the cv shaft. Bang on it with a hammer till it loosens from the hub bearing.
Using the 18mm box wrench, remove all 3 bolts holding the hub bearing on the knuckle
Once the bolts are removed, tap either side of the bearing where it meets the knuckle. Alternate sides while tapping on it and you will see it seperate.
Install new hub bearing in reverse
Torque to 180 ft pounds.
Mount wheel
Torque lug nuts to 100 ft pounds
Drive
Enjoy
Have beer
Find hookers
have a night of debauchery and excess
Wake up in the morning wondering where the hell you parked your truck that you just put the new hub bearing containing the abs sensor on.
