'89 Civic Exhaust System

My young son (we share the car), without asking me, replaced the exhaust system from the catalytic convertor, and introduced a stainless steel "mufflerless system" that ends into a large diameter steel pipe hwere my old muffler used to be.

He did this as he said he likes the loud "Vroom Vroom" sound that it makes while driving. To me, it is driving me bananas, to the extent that what I used to love driving the car, has become a total nightmare for me - The sound is deafening me (which is normal for such a system). My son says to apply a little pipe that came with it, that should reduce the sound (silencer), but when done so, it did not help much, as the loud exhaust noise still comes and I am going nuts.

Is there any gadget I can buy, to attach to the system, that will reduce the sound while I am driving. My son can have the loud noise back when he is driving, by removing this gadget.

Those silencer inserts don't do anything. You should take your car and go to a custom muffler shop and have them weld in a "resonator" either right after the catalytic converter (so the stainless exhaust can still bolt on) or if it is too close to the linkage have the resonator welded in after the linkage before the loop toward the rear trailing arm on the passenger side. I have mine set up like this and it sounds nice...

Get a resonator, make sure he retained the cat, and if all else fails tell your son to get his own car!

yeah tell that little bastard to get his own damn car and stop modding your car. lol.
Or tell him that he can swap the exhaust every time he drives the car and then put the stock exhaust back on when hes done with it.

you can try one of those exhaust control vavles. Arospeed makes on, dont know who else. 3000gt have them stock. Its a vavle you put in the pipe so you can adjust the flow and is contolled in car, you son can use it wide open and you can close it up
