ok well im trying to buy a 89 iroc from a guy a few hours away and it has a built up 305 and he says its a mean beast of a car. but its a one wheelwonder. so i was wondering how easy it is to swap a posi rear end into a 89 iroc. and what car i should get one from and if theres special tools needed. also what should i do to the rear end before putting it in and will everything else fit that was hooked up to the stock one? oh and it has a remanufactured 5 speed. and how much do they usually cost from a junkyard?
thanks-tom

are you talking about swapping the entire third-member? or just puttin a posi into your unit? as far as just swapping an entire third member, its very straight-forward, pull one out, put in the other... i would recommend looking for a 4th gen third member out of a z28, they had posi, and it would most likely be cheaper than buying one for the third gen...
link recently did his ass transplant... i did mine but a long time ago now and i'm not a fresh on the info, ask him for info, i believe some1 else did it recently as well, their name slips my mind right now...

the third member is the entire piece, the gears, axles, and the housing that contains them...

i was talking about the whole thing but how do you do just the third member?
and do the 4th gen z28 rears bolt right up and it done?

third member IS the whole thing lol... and yes a 4th gen rear will bolt right up... i think there are just a few changes to be made to the brake lines... if the donor car had ABS... other than that it is a straight bolt on

88, i swapped in a 4th gen rear, the whole system, from brake caliper on the left to the right, the whole thing. And it bolts right up, very straight forward like drvngstorm said. Like he said, it would definitely be better to get one from a 4th gen Z28 or Trans Am (what i got mine from), cuz you will notice the difference when it's all set and done. My car hit 60 a helluva lot quicker than to one wheeler, and it just looks better when your spinning both tires, instead of one.

Actually since the car has a new engine in it.. 2800 seems pretty reasonable.. You DID buy a NEW one, right?

actually its a remanufactured 2.8 from ac delco. but it also has all new suspension and full polyurathane bushings.kyb shocks and struts and drop zone owering springs. and i replaced too many bushings and boots to count. no rips in interior. alpine head unit. back tires 50%tread front ones are brand new. lke 200 miles maybe on them. theres like 220 miles on the motor.all fluids and filters just changed. k&n s, and ummmmm think thats it.

that's about as fresh and clean that you can find a third gen 2.8... still don't know wether or not you will get 2800 for it... unfortunately, third gens never sell for too much...

i found a new one. as long as i get 2000 for it and i buy the car i think i am getting i will be happy. cause the guy found a good deal on a truck he wants but hes 2000 short and he said he will take 2000 if i buy it by this coming saturday. it has a new crate 305 and a remanufactured 5 spd and it has 4 inch exhaust all through flowmasters a intake, subframe connnectors, small rv cam that is 60 over i think he said, its a 89 iroc by the way, and a bunch of other stuff including a hydrauic clutch and more stuff. he says it might have 500 hp......u think he could be telling the truth?

umm no it has 4 days of bidding left but it would be cool if i won it for 10 bucks lol. someone else already bidded on it though. so i will see what you all think and bid when its about to end if its cheap enough.

I hope that's close enough for you to pick up, because shipping is going to be sickening. (Probably a couple hundred)
Switching out rear end gears is not a simple task. They must be set almost perfectly, or you'll tear them up.

88, if I were you, honestly i'd keep the car you have, I mean you already got a rebuilt engine and all, the car looks cool, and having a V8 now would be kinda bad for you since eh you're 16.. right?
