96 Jetta - strange electrical problem.

just replaced the battery of a 1996 Jetta VR6. The alarm system now is very weird. My son reported pronblems and thought that it might have been the generator. It checks out ok = 14V when running. several very odd symptoms: cigar lighter voltage is about 2.V when ignition is off, then goes to about 6V when iginition is on. It is not steady but fluctuates by maybe a volt at about 1 Hertz. ALso, the console tailgate open indicator lights up dimly and fades at about the same frequency. The power door locks don't work and consequently the alarm system triggers strangely. I have a Haynes manual but the wiring diagram is not good enough.

Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your vacuum pump alarm control module in the right rear trunk lining is bad. Try unplugging it and see if the alarm problems go away and lights problem. Also check for green corrosion on the electrical connector.
