gas gauge problem

Hello, my gas gauge has stopped working, it flutters back and forth. Does anyone have suggestions, could it be bad wires or float in the fuel sending unit?? Oh my car is a 89' Buick Regal limited. Thanks Shawn

Flutters? Like does it read at all? Like maybe if you fill your gas tank the needle sticks at full until its empty or something?
It could be the float, if its not the float, my next best guess would be the guage. Is your guage the horizontal of half circle one?
