01 grand am won't start when cold

I have a 2001 Grand Am with about 70k on it. It will not start when it is cold out, and it's not even winter yet! We replaced the battery but that didn't help. In the afternoon, it starts just fine. In the morning, you may get a click or whine but nothing else.
My husband has gotten it to start twice by turning the key several times, but that doesn't always work.
Any suggestions?

Welcome sbenson . Starter, maybe.. What do you mean it wont start, or it doesnt turn over?

Just like I said before, all you get is a click or a whine. Like a low hum. All the lights and everything else works. It just acts like it's getting no power to the starter. But only when it is cold. In the afternoon it starts up perfectly.

how long ago did you replace the battery? I was adament about staying away from the Delco batteries, the one I put in it's place cranked out more amps....Anyway, when your car doesn't start cold, is this like an everyday occurance, or occasional? And do you have your car jumped and it starts fine later in the day, but the next morning it wont start? If you already replaced your battery recently, then I would definitely check the neg. battery terminal and the ground connection between the neg. post and the front frame next to the radiator. Also, you might be due for a new alternator if your battery and connection checks out ok. Mine was erratically not starting, and I eventually had to swap out the battery......no prob. anymore here. Seemed like there was an internal crack or something inside my battery......in cold it wouldn't start, but warm, everything inside the battery would move together and provide a sufficient draw to start my car. hope this helps.

As i think i said, its either the wires on the starter or the starter is bad. loose or shorted out wires will cuase a whine or hum. the seliniod on the starters probley got the short, on thats affected by hot and cold. Good Luck
