Surely you have time to pack up a few models, or at least get them all to like, the center room of the house on the top shelf of something? Or hey, put 'em in the fridge! Hurricanes are no laughing matter though, hope everything works out okay. How close to the shore are you? And Houston, well that's only about an hour from where I'm at, so if you get terribly bored let me know and you can come up and check out some of my models! :p

(!#$@!) manager is such a (!#$@!) dipshit. I dont get pissed often but when it comes to my life, and my families life I'll (!#$@!) kill someone when they're endangered. There have been dozens of tornados in our area and two within 3 miles of where I work and another headed for our house.

My Mom and brother were waitin' to pick me up outside since I dont have a car right now. Company policy is nobody can leave the store until manager is closed out. There was a tornado half mile from where I work, and another about 2 miles that had touched down. I told the manager I was leaving. Stupid ***** said "Wait a few minutes"...I asked how long, he said a little longer. I told him I'm leaving, I'm not getting caught in this mess. He said that he's writing me up for disobeying company policy and that I my job will be terminated. I told him that I didnt care, my life and my families were more important than a little rule.

I clocked out, left and told my mom that I was fired. So we're writing corporate a letter, my boss (who does like me too) a letter, and phone calls to both.

Stupid (!#$@!) asshole assistant manager that aint worth the (!#@!) he craps tries to threaten me. The asshole has had a grudge against me from day one because I'm young. Stupid (!#$@!) trying to tell me when I can risk my life and when I cant.

Dumbshit hope he gets caught in his 80's rusted minivan and thrown across town.

I feel better now.

So sorry to hear that man, I feared the worst seeing all the news reports. Hurricane Katrina even made the headlines down here in Australia.

So long as you and the family are okay, that is the main thing. All the rest is replaceable. You were insured I hope? Even if your builts are toast you still have the lessons and skills learnt working on them. So if you do choose to continue in the hobby they wouldn't have been for nothing!

Alright boys and girls, this is based off of something I saw at Fark.com. Fark took in people who needed to evaculate, but I think we're gonna try to do it one better. My idea is that we all pony up a little cash, a dollar here, five there, maybe ten dollars from a big spender, and send it down to freakmech. It may not be a lot from one person, and it may not be a lot from all of us, but heck if it won't make a difference. And I know I'm new here, but I can tell this place is tight knit, and I think this might work. Who's with me?

Yeah, or if someone knows his email address, us folk in Europe could send him a donation via paypal.

I just can't imagine what it must be like to lose everything you own - thank god he still has his family.

This is just so depressing I can't believe it. Freakmech, if you're reading this bud I think I speak for us all when I say our thoughts are with you and your family (and indeed the population of New Orleans) at this time.

I really hope your life gets back to some sort of normality as soon as possible.

(I know models aren't the most important thing right now, but it's what we talk about here, so....)

Actually, not really. I hope this isn't too depressing, but it will give some idea what the people are dealing with there. With flooding like this it's not just water flowing in: That water is filled with silt and all kinds of debris from plants, buildings, even sewers. We have had areas that flooded in upstate NY in the last few years, and when the water subsides, the houses are filled with mud, often several feet deep.

Much of the time the houses will not be safe enough to even allow people back in to try and salvage something. People litterally lose everything they couldn't carry with them.

The insurance thing is a good point: Be sure to somehow document your collections in case of something catastrophic like this. I can just see an insurane adjuster saying "there is no way you spent THAT much on model cars".

Well of course that is the wrong time to do anything like that, shame on you for implying I would suggest something like that.

I meant for everybody else who is thankfully not in peril. Just once take some pictures of your workshop or something, in case anything bad ever does happen. I am going to be moving in the next week or two (And I just 30 minutes ago found standing water in the corner of my basement where the workshop is to go, from the last bits of Katrina passing over us), so I will do it then now that I have my own homeowners policy.

No, you should do that now, before anything does happen. Anything that is of value or that is important to you should be documented in case of an emergency. A few years ago, my grampa's ranch was being threatened by forest fires in Colorado; as soon as possible, we spent a few hours cataloging everything (guns, his mother's jewelry, a Navajo rug, etc) and making sure we knew our escape plan (I was to split with the jewelry and the Jaguar XJ12 :iceslolan ) When you get to a collector's status, know what you have or you'll lose it forever. My model car collection is fully documented and cataloged on my laptop; I may not be able to grab any of the cars on my way out, but in the case of a hurricane or whatnot, I would be sure to grab my laptop as I run for the door.

...my grampa's ranch...

Weird bit of regional dialect trivia for ya'll:

Texas: "We're going to the ranch for the weekend."
Louisiana: "We're going to the camp for the weekend."

These two statements mean the same thing.

That was the point I was making, we store these records in the house on the PC etc, but when the worst happens they can be lost with everything else :)

In Atlanta gas prices range from $3.25-$7.50/gallon depending on where in Georgia you are. In the city its $6.50+ per gallon. In the metro its an average of $4.50 per gallon. So on and so forth. Gas prices are horrible.
