DIY Bed Liners

Has anyone done a do it yourself paint/spray on liner?

I have a plastic drop in liner right now (came with the truck). It's nice because it's tough as hell but it is scratching the hell out of the truck.

I don't want to spend $500 for Line-x. I am thinking of doing the Herculiner DIY paint/spray soon. Has anyone done it?

don't worry about the scratches... u gotta sand the bed b4 doing a spray in. I will say that I also looked into that, and, as it looked to me, you'd have to spend almost as much on a DIY liner to get good results as you would taking the truck to a Line-x or Rhino (I have Rhino) dealer and letting them do it. Just my :2cents:

You really don't want to do a do-it-yourself spray liner. It won't last (of course unless you never ut anything in the bed and keep it covered). Go either Line-x or Rhino Liner, both are good. I have the Rhino and have carried a lot of cr@p to the dump in it and no damage (almost 3 yrs old).

I put a herculiner in mine. It sucks. It's chipping and peeling, and I even sandblasted the bed before I sprayed it on. Don't waste the money!

Thanks for the first hand info. I guess you get what you pay for, $150 vs $500. I don't have the $$$ to throw around right now so I guess the plasic liner will have to do for now.

I think you're better off with that than a DIY

i was going to do a diy liner but my friends tried and it peeled after a year and chips easily and he sanded and prepped. i want a rhino but cant afford it either.

I just got a Line-X job about 2 weeks ago, 477.15 out the door for over the rails and the bed. Thats with a $30 discount for being in the Marines. It is well worth the money if you ask me. The only thing they didn't do was the very top of the tailgate. where the plastic is that came from the factory.

does everywhere that sells the rhino and linex, sell the stuff itself not installed? does any one know how much it is to buy materials only?

I think u gotta be a dealer/installer to buy the raw materials

Another liner is SpeedLiner. I had my truck sprayed in the bed, bed caps, tool box, and below the side molding. It is much better than any DIY liner. Blender is correct, you have to be a dealer/installer to buy the stuff.

How much was the Speedliner stuff? Sounds like you paid a pretty penny having all of that done but do you know how much it might have been if you just did the bed over the rails?

Since the Herculiner doesn't seem to be the way to go maybe I should just stick with the plastic liner I have now.

Does anyone have any tricks that help keep the plastic liners from rubbing the paint off of the rails. I have a RuggedLiner (or something like that) that goes over the rails. It doesn't fit real tight over the rails so it kind of vibrates and slowly rubs the paint away in some spots where the liner sits on the outside of the bed. It's actually worn down to metal in one spot and with a New Hampshire winter approaching quickly I'd better cover that up before the salt hits the roads.

Any ideas?

It cost me $700 but normally it would run about $1,200. As for just the bed, I would guess 500- 600. Suggestion on your plastic liner. For now, why not take it out and cut the part that covers the caps off, and use touchup paint the cover the bad spot? A skill saw with a plywood cutting blade makes for easy cutting of plastic.

Yeah, I might do that. If I end up screwing the liner up I'll just get rid of it all together. Thanks for the idea.
