Need some advice in my life....Army Reserves

Ok, I am a freshman at Kansas State University. Paying for college myself, broke as fuck. I talked to the recruiter for the Army Reserves yesterday about joining. It sounds like a good thing to me, My job would be working on the CH-47 Chinook helicopters (the big ass twin rotor ones). I would go into as and E-2, and have full college paid for, minimum 3k signing bonus, and a 350$ kicker.

I don't wanna have a shit ton of debt when I get outa college, I wanna do something with my life, But I don't know what it is. I don't have a f'ing clue on what I want to do "when I grow up" I dont konw what kinda job I want (I'm majoring in Construction Science).

Alright, so the point of this thread is some advice, guidance, etc, people who have been in the reserves........

A signing bonus? I didn't know they gave those. Make sure you double check everything the recruiter tells you against someone who actually in the reserves because recruiters are liars. No offense, but why would they bring in a freshmen in construction science to work on helicopters? Be ready to shovel sh*t

Good deal, if you're careful and don't expect everything to be just peachy, you won't regret your decision.

I say go for it also their are lawyers who know the rules i'd invest into an hour or 2 of his/her time to make sure you can get everything the US Army really offers.

I've found some recutiers sweeten the deal while others only mention somethings each has there own sales method.

Go for it! But be careful, if you are already in college then you may want to ask why you are going in as an E-2? most people with college go in as a E-4 becuse of college.

I think the recruiter is BS'ing you a little. Are you going to finish college first then go in the Army? Or go in the Army and then finish college? If you go in the Army as an E-2 i can pretty much tell you that you will NOT finish college in a timley manner, you just can't do it right now.

I can tell you that being a CH-47 mechanic is AWSOME, i have been doing that job now for over 10 years and i started as a mechanic and moved up to a flight engineer instructor. Yes you can move up the ladder and when the acft takes off to fly you can go with it. We have a good pilot to cewcheif attitude, when the pilot comes out he/she understands that it is your acft.

anyway back on subject, if you can get a signing bonus do it and get as much as you can, but what is the $350 for?

Your recruiter is telling you that the Army is going to pay you an extra $350 a month above your base pay just becasue? Brother if you can get that in writting i'd be all over it! But MAKE SURE IT IS IN YOUR CONTRACT!!

Since your major is in Construction Science would you consider going into the corps of Engineers?

I’m just thinking out loud, anyway, I think it’s pretty awesome that you could both go too school & military @ the same time. When I was just a kid out of high school I wanted to go into the army & become an X-ray technician. I failed the physical because my eyesight is so bad, I was bummed out for a week after that. Sometimes I still wonder what would have happened if I got in.

Anyway, just like anyplace else, stay out of trouble! Also, just like chucksnee said; make sure it’s in writing! One way is to ask “Show me where it says 350 bucks please.” If he says don’t worry about it, start worrying. Keep us posted as to how this works.

Just make sure you know what you are getting into. I'm not stating a go/don't go opinion, it's just that a few people I know who got recruited a while ago, are finding out slowly that recruiters arent entirely "truthful" about certain things when they sign you up. There appears to be more icing than the cake... if you get what I mean? One things for sure though, they will look after you. My cousin, a Marine grunt, just returned from Iraq. GI bill's paying for school, made some life-long friendships, and got discplined enough to hold his weight in society... a solid choice if you are currently not sure of what direction life is taking you. Just think it over though.
