Difference between motors for F1 and GTR

Could someone please spell out all the differences between the S70/1 and S70/2 motors? Was the ECU software the only difference, or are there actual physical differences between the two motors as well?

The S70/1 was a derivative of the S70. The S70 was a 5.6L V12 with 24-valve heads and would be found under the hood of a BMW 850 CSi, whereas the only S70/1 I'm aware of was built for the stillborn BMW M8 concept. The S70/1 was roughly 6.0L in displacement and featured 48-valve heads. There are reportedly no interchangable parts between the S70 and S70/2, however I don't know if that is the case with the S70/1 and S70/2. I suspect that it may be true as during Gordon's first visit to Munich he was shown a hopped up version of the 5-liter V12 engine that had been fitted with 48-valve heads (S70/1 I would suspect). Gordon's response, as quoted in DA was "Too big and heavy. Definitely not for us." Paul asked Gordon what they really wanted. His response "Big displacement in the smallest overall package-size - absolutely no more than 600mm long - revving around seven-five - 550-plus hp - maximum weight 250kg - rigid enough to work as a load-bearing structural member - dry sump to minimize overall height and avoid surge in high-G cornering." To this, Paul reportedly responded "We'll do a new engine."
I suspect what you had meant to ask was the difference between the S70/2 and S70/3 GTR engines - as those are the engine codes for the McLaren F1 and F1 GTRs. The interesting thing as noted in the thread that sparked this, is the final year of the S70/3 most definitely had different internals or a shorter block, as the displacement of the engine is listed as being slightly smaller than the previous two years.
It's going to take an expert to answer these questions correctly, and I haven't found one yet.
