Looking into the Trooper and I have some Qs

Hi all! This looks like a great forum.

I'm looking into replacing my current car with something I don't have to make payments on. I'm looking at a few older 4WD trucks/SUVs, the Trooper being one of them. I went to see a 1991 with 100,000 miles on it a few days ago. The truck looked great (except for some rust on the rear-most cross-member) and I think I can get it for about $1700.

It's got a 2.8L V6 engine that I hear is a Chevy. I have heard that there is a head gasket problem on this era of Trooper, but I'm not sure on which engine the problem occurs. The alternator/AC belt was also very loud until the truck warmed up. The seller said that was common on these trucks.

So, here are the questions: What do y'all know about a potential head gasket problem on the 2.8L V6? Is it common for the belt to squeak? (It would get old fast...) Is the engine the interference type or will I be OK if the timing belt goes? Are there any other common problems with the 1991s that I should know about and check up on before I buy?

It seems that people usually find that their Troopers are fairly reliable and that's what I'm looking for. I also love the wing windows (smoking windows) :bigthumb: . Thanks a lot for tolerating (and hopefully replying to) the noob questions!

the head problems was with the lsuzu built 2.6l not the chevy engine.

As for loud ac alts, I think the guy is feeding you a line of crap. The loud sound is either the ac cluth ($$$ to replace) is on the way out or the alt bearings are going bad. Seeing that it is a chevy engine at least you know the parts will be cheaper.

Thanks! Did Isuzu sell Troopers with 2.8L Chevy engines? I don't think they ever replaced the engine, so he could be wrong there, too. I'll have to do a bit more research into the belt sound on his truck...

Did the 1991's have timing chains or timing belts? How long before a change is due? The truck has just over 100,000 miles...
