when accelerating or just revving, my 240 makes a really loud whinning sound. Sometimes it doesnt then it comes back. Sounds like its coming from the fan. I replaced the fan clutch because the old one was frozen. But the noise still exists. What could it be? 89 sohc

sounds like a problem when an accessory(like the PS pump, alternator, ect) is being overworked

Hmm, mine makes what sounds like what you have described when I have my clutch in, but let it out it stops. :shrugs:
It would have to be a belt or somethink like that though, if you were actually running, one could easily think.

it sounds more like a turbo diesel. more like a howling sound. and it takes away power, acceleraton is slower than normal.

^ Haha, stethoscope. Check your throttlebody, you may have a prick/hole/chunk missing. Gap may be too big. Thats what mine does, but i enjoy it.

its your stock engine fan if you still have it on your engine still...I have the SR20 in my 240 and it does the same thing...dont know y...might be a water pump problem...or just he blades from the fan gettin close to things and causing air vibration...i know this cuz i took my engine fan off and ran a radiator fan only and the whining stopped.

Mine had a similar whine to it, only it never caused power -drain-
It turned out the sound was my old air intake system. The tubing was cracked, So when I would high-rev it, it would actually pull the top of the air-filter box up. The simple equation of more air coming in would give some added boost (but it would also let in the local sand too...) The tubing was replaced and I put a K&N filter into it, so I get the enjoyable part, still.
