Banjo keyless entry remote questions

When did the Passat start using the Banjo type remote, and did it stop in 99?

I see posts on various forums mentioning the 98 using a switchblade remote - but I thought the Passat didn't have those until 00?

Can someone clear up which years used which style remote for the 1st gen switchblade and the Banjo type (both Hella and Clarion)

Hella is the switchblade, clarion is the banjo. I believe they started using the switchblade in 2000. You cant mix them either because they will not program
