Project Super Sleeper

Okay well I'm starting to look for a new car and i've decided to go with a super sleeper that i plan on modding the hell out of....i want one of those cars that you just look at and shrug off and then when they go WOT, you're confused on how a family sedan could go that fast...i'm not planning on spending more than 15k on the car....and i've narrowed it down to these:
1. 2000 Pontiac GTP (i would debadge this and take off any spoilers etc....make it look like a regular grand prix)
2. 1999 Taurus SHO (same as GTP...make it look like a regular taurus)
3. 1998 Buick Riviera (this would probably be the best sleeper...but the heaviest)
4. 2000 ish Nissan Maxima
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS OF THESE TYPES OF CARS WOULD BE APPRECIATED :icon16:

The spoilers on the GT and GTP to my knowdlege on the 00' models are the same.
I would stay away from the darker colors. I have a dark blue stock 00' GT and these punks, especially after high school gets out for s omething will try to race me and stuff. I don't return the challenge and it looks funny when they take off the line farting at full speed and I just start off like normal.
A white GTP would be the best. However, you would may want to replace the GTP emblem on the doors with just a Grand Prix GT. The GT's are really common, so I doubt that you would get too many looks. They are cheap fro a dealer.
If I wasn't such a conservative spender I would probably be doing the same as you. I would call it more of a learning experience since I want to learn how to be proficient at fixing cars than just to make it fast.
Good Luck. The Grand Prix's are great. They are really powerful and you can still fit 4 full sized adults and a bunch of stuff in the trunk. Unlike Civics and Mustangs :-).

Just my 2 cents :2cents: but another ideal sleeper IMO is the Buick Regal. Of course a GS re-badged to LS. I have less people egging me on in my Regal GS than GTP. Buicks are notorious as being an old man's car and being underestimated. Its a natural sleeper.

I never thought about a Regal. The GS has the supercharged 3800 correct?

I'm not sure which specific model it is, but there is a Regal with the SC'ed 3800. Very small back seat though. 4dr had less leg room than my 2dr GP I think.
My friend just told me tonight about a sleeper he saw at a show. Ford escort with a 5.0 V8. Even had dual exhaust, but 1 pipe was cut short so you couldn't see it.
I think the Buick would make a nice choice. It's got the definate "old man" status, and their seats are more comfortable than any GP. I used to have a Regal custom myself.

The '97 - '04 Regal GS has the the same L67 supercharged engine as the GTP and the heavy duty 4T65E tranny. Same hp and torque. It's easy to rebadge. The LS and GS look identical on the outside except for the GS and supercharged logo on the rear end. Lots of engine mods available for it too.

i REALLY like the buick riviera or the regal gs concept...and since they have the same engines as GTPs like you guys said the modability should be pretty good....i wonder if weight would be a factor though? if it weighs quite a bit more than the GTP then i would basically be wasting more money trying to get the heavier car to be fast when i could already have the GTP smoking ricers....

The curb weight of my '01 Regal GS is 3545 lbs. It's fully loaded and has 16" wheels stock with P225/60 tires. Its within 100 lbs of a similarly equiped GTP with 4 doors. The GTP 2 door coupe is lighter.
I've added a rear spoiler.

i was wondering if changing down to a smaller S/C pulley was an easy install or not? and what kind of mods that 3800 best responds to....thanks for the responses...

How bout a ferio. Loyd's down here in texas will sell you a turn key ferio w/ a GTP motor in it. I think he's selling them w/ LS1's also. Would be lightweight, rwd and who ever thinks one of those is gonna be fast.

You mean Fiero, yea lots of ppl are putting in SC 3800, LT1, and LS1's in em...tons of info on the web on doing that. I would say since it's rampant it's not exactly something someone wouldn't see coming.

No problem Rip. I thought it was a new car or something. Maybe I missed something when I spent 9 years abroad. Now I remember them from the mid-eighties. It was called the plastic car. The GT was nice.

I'd say its not as rampant as the number or GP's/Monte's/Impalla's on the road.

I have a 1997 1/2 Regal GS...Ive beaten alot of Mustangs and Ricers with it...it comes with alot of stock options like leather, am/fm cassette w/ CD, traction control and more. It also shares the same body style with the Buick Century, which is a total Grandma car...I like to call it Grandma's car on steroids...Best of all it comes with alot of stock items such as dual airbags, DRL, auto lights, antilock brakes, passive alarm, traction control, which help lower insurance rates...Regal GS is definitly an excellent sleeper

You can modify the heck out of it too since its a Supercharged 3800 with the same HD tranny as the GP.
It would be hilarious to see out at a dragstrip. :) Almost as funny as those Turbo Caravans that you see floating around in the videos over the net.

The Regal was discontinued in 2004 and replaced by the '05 LaCrosse which I think was a big mistake on GMs part. But they are available at great prices used and hold a good overall value. BTW - Cops tend to ignore them too. Also, the Regal GS has the RPO FE3 sport performance handling package which puts it on par with a GT/GTP in handling but has a smoother ride.
