What was the noise?
if it was a damn loud clacking that means your bearings are TOAST. If you use pounded bearings for long enough eventually the car will do the start and die routine (amid lots of noise)
thats really all I can think of... I dont think Auto KA24s make enough power to crack ring lands.
Loud Noises - prolly the bearings getting loose
Cruisin Around on if for a day - Beating the shit out of loose bearings
Firing up the car the next morning - no oil pressure on shitty bearings = spun bearing(s)
Lots of spun bearings - Firing Sputtering then dying.
If the "loud Noise" was clacking Id drain the oil and look for metal shavings (or chunks)... If you spun the bearings that horribly then you'll need a new motor.

there is a bushing for the drive shaft. look and see if its worn out. the bushing (looks like a doughnut) is between the first drive shaft and the second one.
when wormn out, it causes noice and vibration right under the center of the car.

Check engine/transmission mounts. They are garbage on every automobile released that sports a KA engine. Even old minivans with SOHC KAs most often have crapped out engine mounts.
Dying is common on 240s with IACV related problems. Check out www.240sx.org for more on the typical problems associated with 240sx's.
