getting engine out

What do you guys use to take an engine out? I mean I could get a hoist, but it looks sort of pricy. I wondering if there is any cheaper way to build something similar? I am starting to get more proffesional and buying/working on camaros become my part time job while i am in college. And it actually brings money. I cant see myself working some 8 dollar part time shitty job. So I am gonna rent someones garage (3 car one) since I live in a apartment.

If you don't know anyone that could loan you one, I'd call around and find somewhere near you that would rent it.
You could run some chains over the rafters and use a come-along (manual winch) but the immense stress your putting on them is kinda playing with fire.

I did it out the top with a pep boys cherry picker, like 3 times now. If you take your time, its not that bad of a job although with a lift, its a snap.

Formula, i was pondering on getting one of those, but now i think i will. The kid i got the Flowmaster from had one and they were using it for everything. Not that expensive either (yeah, i got a nerve to say that, i'm broke).

Don't get them from ebay. Go to autozone or pepboys or strauss. The shipping they charge on ebay will kill you and pep boys always have them on sale and mine has worked like a pro for 2 - 3 years now.

nope, the engine slides forward once it comes out of the motor mounts. Taking the engine out is the easy part. Although aligning the tranny pins in the block with a cherry picker takes nerves of steel.

btw if you decide to go Mr. Luos route withthe jack stands and a harness and you find your self under the car trying to get the jack stand pin out and it dont wanna come out, take a deep breath and check to make sure the car isnt resting on the jacks.

Do you have to make any clearance to get the engine out the top? I always thought the water pump had to come off and the rad yanked out before it would clear.
I should get me one of those.
BTW I don't know if anyone else saw but in another thread the dude fastened the engine hoist to the strut brace and lifted the whole front of the car up over the engine & suspension. Not exactly sure if I'd try that myself but it sure seemed clever.
EDIT: Uh, ya nevermind that last part lol.

You have to remove, pretty much everything from the front of the engine to get her out. The intake manifold needs to come off to get it out from the top, the water pump, ofcourse the radiator and condensor and tranny cooler, all the accessorys,. It would be much easier to remove it from the bottom, if there was a safer manner in which to do it without a lift, I would have definetly attempted it that way. Also I saw a article on the web about how to remove from the bottom and yeah, the guy used a strut tower brace to lift it off the engine and tranny, then roller them out on like a flat wooden dolly he made and when finished lowwered the car back on them. It looked pretty easy.

I didn't have to. I just did. I needed the cam out before I pulled the motor, someone was buying it.
So I tore down to make life easier when we pulled it out.
The whole process really wasn't that bad. Took some time, and we forgot to remove the brake lines (which broke) but not a problem. Just get new ones for the install of the new motor.
And as far as I am concerned....this is STILL just a bolt-on car. Motor bolts on.
It will look stock under the hood minus fuel rails, lid, and headers. The color of the block will be a touch different, but most people won't know the difference.

if you were to swap the t56 into your third gen, bout the only things you need is the crossmember, and speedometer mods so the speedo reads right... that is if you already had a manual... if u had an auto you are going to need pedals, slave cylinder, cut a hole for the shifter and a new shift plate...

There you go Luos - I knew it was someone in here. BTW drvngstorm05 I also saw them drop the entire front suspension & motor/tranny on HP TV. Speaking of HP TV, did anyone else catch it a few weeks ago when they took that LS-Gun to the track? Stage II heads (can't remember if it had a bigger cam or not), Baer brakes, N2O kit and a new 12-bolt rear (although they used the same shitty control arms, etc.)
This thing NA was running high 13's! I was like what the hell? Mind you they didn't show 60ft times and the track was hot (car was also on drag "radials"). I'm sure the car was making decent HP but high 13's, shit. On the juice the friggin thing dropped 2 full seconds off though.
Just goes to show you big HP doesn't necessarily tell the whole tale. The only guys I've ever seen super-brag about their HP - the ones who will pull their dyno sheet out of the car - will never race their cars. Its cause they've been embarrased already and are sick of or out of excuses as to why their 500 rwph monster got smoked by car with a lot less shit and half the money put into it.
And eh, that story was classic drvngstorm05 - buddy asking you if its a 6. I probably couldn't have laugher at him either... just utter disbelief.

i think the 13 sec run was on the stock tires and on the 11.1 sec run they used the bottle and changed tires to drop the 2 seconds. they were also complaining about the transmissioin being junk or something. pretty bad ass car either way
