2000 blazer transmission problem

I have a 2000 lt with 61,000 miles. Reverse is out, and can't change from 4 wheel drive low. Does this sound like a transmission rebuild/replace, or is there maybe a less expensive possibility. I don't have the money to tow to the dealer and then have them say the transmission is shot. If that is the case I'll have to save up some cash.
Thanks so much for any help.

I've gotta 2000 that had tranny problems too. $2800.00 later though, I was back in business again. Maybe I can help. What does it do when you put it in reverse? I hope you don't have the same problem I had!

Have you checked the tranny fluid level yet?

You have to check it hot with the engine idling in park.

Just got back from vacation in Washington state, where we spent US$ 3,300 for a replacement transmission on our 2000 Jimmy. 57,000 miles. I can't believe it. Came around a corner, uphill, tranny downshifted and started screaming. Got to where we were staying, and reverse was totally non-functional. Drove it to a dealers where they replaced it in 2 days to get us home, but not a cheap solution. We were told that it was the sun gear case that failed.

Also, just days before leaving for vacation, spent CAN$ 275 to replace the auto 4WD switch, as we were having problems with the truck shifting from 2WD to 4LO on its' own, and not wanting to switch back.

Could these be related?

Anyone ever heard of doing a pre-emptive strike against these %$@! reaction sun shells? It sounds like just about all 4L60Es built before 2002 are time bombs, so I'm wondering how much work it would be to replace that part with the beast version before it comes apart and does expensive collateral damage.
