does anyone here know about the 4L60 or 700R4 transmissions????? did they use them on the silverado or sierra trucks??? I have a 91 caprice with 200k+ miles with one of those two transmissions and a 305 engine I plan on getting a truck and Im thinking of getting an older truck as long as it has a great long lasting drive train like the one on my caprice

The 700R4 and the 4L60 are one in the same. I have a 90 K1500 and it does have a 4L60 (700R4) in it. The 4x4 version has a different tail housing because of the transfer case.

I think the cutover to 4L60E was 93 or 94 but I am not 100 % sure.

They are not exactly the same, but they are close. Yes, the Silverado and the Sierra both had them, as did many of the other GM rear wheel drives. 4L60E came out in late 92. Anything before that has a 700r4.

if you get an old truck, and hence dont care about gas mileage, i would recommend a turbo 350 or a turbo 400 if you plan on beating the crap out of it. If you want a dependable tranny for daily driving, they are very cheap, although the 700r4 is a way better transmission, with overdrive and all... my dads 700r4 in his 90 silverado was still going strong at 180,000 miles when he sold the truck with the original 350 in it also.
