SMOG CHECK Malfunction Indicator light

I took my blazer into a smog shop everything passed except the ECS fro Malfunction Indicator light. The shop said the light never came on in the car put there tester determined that the engine light was not working. what does this have to do with a smog test is there anyway to get around it. I think the shop just wants more money.

SIlly question, but does the Service Engine Soon light turn on when you first turn the key to the run position, and a second or two after engine start?

Not all codes turn on the check engine light.

As Wolfox asked, does the check engine light come on for a second or so when you turn the engine on?

yes the sevice engine light comes on then goes off

Get it checked at another shop. They are jerking you around if they told you that the light is not functioning. If it lights up at engine run/start and then goes out a few seconds later, it's functioning normally. I think your instincts are right, Fonrob.

Brings up and interesting question - will the blazers store a code without turning on the SES light? Mine is a 98

Yes the blazer will store a code without turning on the light. Some of the codes turn on the light immediately, some turn it on after 2 or more failures and some just don't turn it on at all. Anything having to do with smog would probably be an emission code. If I'm not mistaken...I believe that all emission codes turn on the light.


Autozone (and some Advance Autos) will pull the codes for free.
