ABS and Brake light stays on

The ABS light and Brake light came on while I was driving my 2003 Dodge Durango (42,000 miles). A motor sound under the hood on the drivers side also stayed on. I took it to the Dodge dealership and they ran a diagnostic test after they disconnected the ABS module so my battery would not run down. They said it was code 67 - Pump motor circuit open and that they needed to replace the ABS control module - CAB at a price of $614 plus labor. I saw several messages that indicated that it could possibly be the rear speed sensor at a cost of $33. Some of the messages mentioned that the speedometer was not working at lower speeds. My speedometer seems to be fine. Is it still possible that it could be the rear speed sensor when my speedometer is working and the ABS motor would not shut off unless unplugged?

i don't think a bad sensor would cause that. if it was a bad sensor, the ABS control modual would have turned itself off, not keep running. but a defective control modual would do it

I have to agree. Changed my rear differential speed sensor to fix a constant ABS & maybe Brake light...don't remember. But it also did not indicate any speed until about 10 or 15 mph.

I have the same problem this morning on my '99 - ABS light + BRAKE light. Neither was lit after I'd driven to work and back. Then I set the parking brake and left it for a few hours. After taking the brake off, I noticed ABS and BRAKE were lit. I am positive that the parking brake is released and checked for any undesirable smells and/or heat in the brake area - nothing. Where do I start?

If you also have no speed indication for the first 10-15 mph and then it comes on, then it is most certainly the rear differential speed sensor. My local dealership had the part in stock...about $20 to $30 2 years ago.
It sits right on top of the rear differential on mine. About a 20 minute job & I seem to remember needing a deep socket to get to it. The dealership would have charged about $300, claiming that they had to delete the faults in the ABS module. A local mechanic told me that was BS & it was. Changed the unit & there was never a light & the speedometer worked just fine.

Don't know if it was shown in the Haynes manual or not, but you should get one anyway as it is pretty handy for a lot of different things.

Good Luck

My ABS module was changed under warranty but I did not troubleshoot it. My ABS & Brake lites were coming on intermittently but clearing if the vehicle was shut down. I had to wait until they came on and then left the vehicle running while I waited for a technician to come free. If yours is on all of the time, that may not be a necessity.

I would not feel tied to the dealership as any trustworthy shop with the equipment to read ABS codes can do the job for half the cost. Competent is competent & dealerships are about cash generation to make up for high overhead. Reputation by referral and a nasty waiting area is what I look for in a mechanic. Remember, you pay for everything you sit on, watch or drink.

I'm also having some problems with ABS.
-Both lights (ABS/Brake) are on.
-Speed is registering @ all speeds.
The question I have is, when I turn the key on normally I here the familiar loud gush at the ABS pump. Now however I here nothing. Meaning the pump doesn't even turn on??? I've checked fuses both in dash and under the hood, both look good. I have not taken it to a repair shop for a quote yet, but can I assume it may be the pump itself???

Don't have a clue what's causing your problem, but I'm pretty sure that your ABS system is shutdown whenever you have an ABS light. So that's why you are probably not hearing the ABS pump.

MY 99 DID THE SAME THING LAST WEEK. LIGHT STAYED ON WHILE I DROVE TO THE MARKET. NEXT MORNING NOTHING. IT STAYED OFF UNTIL THIS MORNING. I RODE OVER A LITTLE RUFF SPOT IN THE ROAD AND IT SOUNDED AS IF SOMETHING WAS LOOSE ON THE FRONT RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRUCK. NOT SURE IF ANYONE ELSE IS HEARING A NOISE COMING FROM THEIR WHEELWELL. I AM GOING TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT THIS WEEKEND. ALSO, MY ABS SEEMS TO STILL WORK. I RODE OVER SOME ICE AND PURPOSELY SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES. ABS ACTIVATED LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE. IM THINKING A LOOSE SENSOR.

I was having problems with my ABS and Brake light coming on after reaching speeds of 30 mph(No speedometer issues). I changed the rear sensor with no change so I gave up for a year or two. I took my D in for the recall on ball joints and after $1k later the dealer tech notice my brake problem and determined it was the break switch under the break pedal. $50 bucks later the ABS/Brake problem was fixed. I haven't seen this fix mentioned on here so I thought I would mention it. Might save somebody some serious cash down the line.
