Siphon from the tranny?

Has anyone had any real success using a syphon to remove tranny fluid from an overfilled transmission? I'd rather have the fluid changed entirley, but until I have the money to do that I just need a temporary fix. I've heard of removing other engine fluids using this method. I would think it possible. Ideas?
