shifting problem when stopping

I have a 96 grand prix se with a 3.1l engine. it also has 174,000 miles. the problem i am having is if i have to come to a hard stop the car shifts into a neutral state for a second then shifts into gear. driving normally it shifts great. i am hoping this doesn't mean a new tranny. any help would be appreciated.
