89 RS V8 electrical issues

This is my first visit to this forum, and I really hope you guys can help me. About 9 months ago, I bought an 89 RS V8 5 speed. I don't know much about cars in general, but my uncle is a retired mechanic ("old school"). He's been able to fix problems so far, but I think this one is more than he can handle. My steering wheel was loose, and he found that the whole column had to be replaced. Because we couldn't afford a new one, we found one at a junk yard that he said was a perfect match. It came from a 97 IROC automatic.
He could fit it in fine, but I don't think he got the wiring correct. (He has said in the past that he has a hard time matching the colored-wires, plus the 89 wires don't match the 97 wires). Although he says he figured it out and all wires are connected correctly, the car won't run.
It can start, but then dies. He says the fuel isn't getting to the fuel injectors. We already checked the fuel pump and filter.
Can anyone get me wiring diagrams for both the 89 and the 97 and tell me how to match 'em up?
I know I'm probably asking for a miracle, but I really love my Camaro and don't want to junk it. Right now, I'm driving a 15 year old Honda Civic that my neighbor was going to donate to charity.
Thanks in advance!

First off welcome to the forum...

Secondly, there never was a 97 IROC o I'm assuming it's just from a 97 which would not be a perfect fit at all...They are two completely different body styles. I would suggest trying to find a different column from another junk yard.

Go to Http://car-part.com and hopefully you can find a closer fit part in your area for a decent price...

Let us know how it turns out.

First, thank you!

Second, because the junkyard man and my uncle both seemed to think that it fits in my '89 well, I am prone to believe that I have the year of the other car wrong, and I apologize.

I'll repost once I get hold of my uncle and double check the year. I am fairly sure that it was somewhere in the late 90's.

Sorry for wasting this thread and your time.

No such thing as a wasted thread or wasting anybody's time on this forum. We are all pretty easy going and most of us are glad to help you out whenever we can. Let us know on the year of that column when you find out... Also, I checked your bio and noticed you are in Hawaii, and looked up the part on that site I mentioned and naturally couldn't find a part for you, so I dunno what you can do it might be tough unless that part you have works, which I hope it does work for you... Anyways, let us know we are glad to help ya out...

You might try ebay for the steering column. I just bought one for my 85 z28 for $125.00. Just checked and there were three on there that fit between 82-92 year models. Hope this helps.
