my car will not shift into 3rd gear it always stays in 2nd.....what is wrong with it. it is a 4 speed overdrive tranny with a 3L v6. and how come my tach works sometimes and sometimes it does not work. i here a strange noise coming from the back of my car kinda like a grinding noise.

from what you're describing sounds like a bad output speed sensor, though seems odd that your tach would intermittently work it makes sense that your speedometer wouldn't work. The grinding noise sounds like you have bad wheel bearings in the back.

the speedometer works. and the grinding noise is coming from the back and when it is not moving it is still making the noise

you might have a bad solenoid pack, thus not allowing your transmission to stay in "limp mode" though, like I said before you tach not working doesn't make sense to me. The grinding, if it's doing it all the time even could be a fuel pump that ready to crap out on you.

once again, another a604 in fail-safe mode. I'm guessing that you just did a tranny fluid change. You didn't make sure that it was full before you shifted it through the speeds. There is an air bubble in the tranny, don't go replacing parts cause its useless. You need to get the air out and have the code cleared by a drb II scan tool. After this you will be fine.

I've got a '91 Daytona 2.2L Turbo automatic (assume 4-speed). The car will sometimes, but not always, shift into 4th. I have not changed the transmission fluid but occassionally have to add some. My speedometer works intermittently, but I assume that's an independent speed sensor problem. Any idea if the transmission shifting problem is caused by a similar problem as the '90 described above or something different?

there's air in the system, get it out and get the code cleared.

yeah i got it fixed. it was a little wire near the tranny sensor. it works like new. it shifts through gears nice and smooth I ma thinking of keeping the car now. but I still want a 1994 cutlass supreme 2 dr.

Cutlass supreme huh, they are junk, made by GM. I had one and it was my last GM product that i'll ever buy. They have too many problems.

Just be prepared to put a lot of parts into it. Your daytona is more reliable then a cutlass supreme.
