LOS ANGELES -- After it was announced recently that for years some automakers, primarily Asian ones, used inflated horsepower figures to win new customers, but are now backtracking on those claims, the defensive responses from Toyota fans on the street and around automotive Internet chat rooms has been extreme.

In Los Angeles, a newly formed group of Camry loyalists, the TFFI (Toyota Fans Fight Ignorance), have spoken out regarding their 3.0L V6 engines and the assertion that they now have 20 less horsepower than they did only a few days ago.

Jedidiah Hudson, leader of the L.A. chapter of the organization has staunchly defended his favorite Asian Automaker. "Even if it were true, this does nothing to affect the performance of my car. And it would still have more horsepower-per-liter than many of the so-called 'American' car companies' cars, which are no more 'American' than Toyota, by the way."

When asked if in retrospect he might have paid more for his car than he would have if he had known the true horsepower figures, Jed brushed off the question, "Even if Chevrolet offered a 240 horsepower midsize sedan for the same price as my so-called 190hp V6, it still wouldn't be a Toyota. And that's really all that matters, isn't it?"

Fellow chapter member Wallace Dervace chimed in, "And besides, until cars.ign.com reports it, I won't believe it. It didn't happen. I still have the literature that says that my Toyota makes 210hp, and unless I get an official letter from Fujio Cho stating otherwise, that's the number I'm going by.

When asked if he thought Toyota had deceived him or his fellow fans, Jed grew visibly upset. "There is no reason to think that Toyota has been anything but a benevolent force in the United States, offering new jobs for Americans who want to work on the factory line for their friendly new Japanese Taskmasters while helping to take down the cesspit of corruption, corporate greed, and shoddy product that embodies Detroit's so-called 'Big 3'."

But it isn't just on the Web and in fan clubs that this news is having an apparent effect. Local auto parts shops like Auto Quadrant have reported a sudden surge in "Sport Compact Tuner" parts sales.

Jim Meledy, an Auto Quadrant owner shook his head in disbelief, "I thought we would never get rid of our stock of Tribal Dragon seat covers and Megaton Mufflers. There was an inch of dust on most of our Tuner parts section until this news. Since I've seen a bunch of kids come in looking to buy the stuff. Heard them talking something about 'making up the horsepower deficit' with these things. Whatever floats their boat, I wasn't about to tell them that a windshield banner sticker wouldn't make them go faster when I'm finally getting rid of all this stock. I was considering buying another box of Type-R emblems, though. Those things are in high demand now."

just for starters

Hudson should take some time to actually research Panoz and Saleen. The Panoz Esperante was designed, built, and even raced in a North America sports car racing series (the American Le Mans Series) and was raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year.

He should also check out Saleen and one of their cars, the S7. Unlike most exotics, the S7R (S7 racecar) has won nearly 40 races around the world.
