I just bought a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS. The dealer I bought it from only gave me a key (no keyless remote) and the car doesn't have the code button access on the sides of the doors like some models. I want to buy a transmitter for the keyless entry but I don't know if the car has the equipment inside to work with the transmitter to unlock/lock the doors. I am also trying to find out if my model has the fuel flex system or not.
By the way, I wasn't going to buy the extended warranty for this vehicle until after I started reading this board about the problems with this year explorer. - R

Actually, I found that ford provided a VIN# lookup on their site but it still doesn't provide all the info I'm looking for. - R

Well,
I guess I'll keep answering my own post as I discover more info. I read the owner's manual and it said to turn the key from position 1 to 3 very quickly (8 times within 10 seconds) to program the remote and the doors locked so I know my vehicle is equipped with the keyless entry. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing what serial number the original transmitter had on the back to order a replacement. Any ideas? - R

Any of the standard 4-button remotes should work. However, those manuals are used for all models so while it states the remote programming procedures in the manual that doesn't guarantee your vehicle is equipped. Not sure if it's a standard option on all models. Check eBay and get a cheap 4-button remote to test it out. Then buy more if it works/your vehicle is equipped.
