B18C GSR or B18C Type R

ok so i read that the Type R has +30hp more than the GSR. Yet they have these 700+hp civics who (i think) use GSRs. Are they using B18C GSRs to get the 700 or the Type Rs? And if they r using GSRs would it be possible to reach or surpass 700 with the Type Rs or are they purely for NA use.

arrgghh...I haved searched and finding a definitive answer is a pain in the A$$. Heres what i've learned so far...

B18b - better for turbo and has more torque than GSR

B18b w/Vtec head - just as fast as GSR engine but lots cheaper.

B18C GSR - great for turbo as well but higher compression. less torque than B18B. way more expensive but worth it.

B18C Type R - Stock HP is higher than GSR but high compression makes it crappy for turbo.

Also got prices for all these
B18B - $650
B18C GSR 96+ - $3000
B18C Type R 98+ - $4800
(prices for GSR and TYPE R include everything needed to make the swap)

i'm really just trying to figure out which engine has the most HP potential. as you can see it's a matter of spending $4800, $3000 or $650 and I want to be ABSOLUTELY sure. thx

actually your search hasnt gotten you very far so let me correct some things...

B18b - better for STOCK turbo application and has LESS torque than GSR...GSR can just be as good for turbo once you lower the compression

B18b w/VTEC head - fast but still not as strong as GSR and IS NOT LOTS CHEAPER...building a reliable ls/vtec is not cheap and is something for serious tuners...

B18C GSR - yes it is great for turbo and yes higher compression and MORE torque than B18b...yes way more expensive and worth it

B18C Type R - yes stock hp is higher than GSR and yes the high compression makes it crappy for turbo BUT there is such a thing as lowering compression and I have seen some great turbocharged Type Rs that can run may be not huge amounts of boost but they still are very fast. This is your greatest N/A swap candidate...

Do you have a budget? If no there are huge possibilities of what you can do...

There is also a b18c option - I forget the name of it - that is bored and stroked for 250 HP at the flywheel, that runs somewhere in the neighborhood of $15K. I can't remember what Honda calls it, but I remember seeing it on Horsepower TV or something during one of the car and tuner show episodes.

If you really wanna hit the 700 HP civic, you might look into boring an H22 with turbo and all kinds of beefy internals. Course, then you won't ever be able to turn over 25 mph.

talk about expensive though...sheesh!

The b18 option is just a modified honda engine..its a crate engine actually.

And why would a civic with a 700hp H22 only be able to turn at 25 mph? :shakehead

thx for all the replies and for correcting my faulty data

I was thinking about the H22 engine but i heard it completely screws up your weight and you end up with all kinds of understeer. The 700 HP civic I saw was also stated to have a B18C/EJ6 and from what i know EJ6 means 96-00 engine or something like that. Now im wondering if it was a B18C GSR or Type R. I guess it would take turbos to make it that fast so it had to have been the GSR right...or a bored out type r. money right now isn't that much of a factor.

Well the GSR and Type-R blocks are exactly the same, so chances are you'll find a GSR block for cheaper, so go with that.

thx. saving me a load of money by knowing the right stuff. I was just gonna go ahead with the Type R but the GSR seems more worth it. thx again.

oh by the way what about an F20C or is that totally out of the question?

Yes, an H22 would totally screw up the weight ratios and cause mad understeer.

(hence, only being able to turn at about 25mph )

an F20 requires A LOT of fabrication including cutting the firewall, not worth the effort IMO.

I thought F20C was a S2000 engine and if it is then i wouldnt say its out of the question its just going to cost lots of money...my advice is to stick with a GSR...

is it even possible to swap an s2000 motor into a civic? and also, aren't s2000's RWD?

not so much the weight ratio, read the H22 faq in the 92-95 forum. It's the way it sits, slightly tilted back, that affects the handling. Nothing a good suspension won't take care of.

A lot of power in a front driver isn't always a good thing. There will be a point where you have so much power that you won't be able to get any traction. Where's the fun in driving if all you can do with it is spin the tires?

That engine is the Mr. Gasket GX20 Beast....its just a built and bored B18C1 (GSR)

The GSR is the best option you have for boost.....stock motor they can push 350whp and built can do well over 800whp. If you're thinking of boost, get the GSR and you'll have a good platform to work from.
