transmission problem

when i come to a stop light then start to go when i press on the gas and i start to go my rpms rush up to 3000 rpms but it doesn't accelerate what is the problem?

I take it this is an automatic???
welcome to AF.
check your fluid level.
does this only occur once hot? intermittantly? ALL the time?
could be something as minor as the filter is clogged, or a modulator giving out, to something as major as you've got 120+K of hard miles on the trans and nothing has ever been done, so the whole thing needs an overhaul.
post back with more specifics: did it just start? how and when?
how many miles? have you jumped a curb lately? might be a loose vacuum lead...
as much info will help.

(but definitely check fluid first; if it's low, it would cause a rev, then a HARD shift kick into gear)

it happens alot it only has 76k on it just had new brakes put on all around new muffler and cat converter it has new dist. cap and rotor new spark plugs and wires its a 85 6cyl.

all it takes for these autos is to be 1 pint low to make it shift funny, any more than that and you could have sever trans damage.
