What are some cheap upgrades for '92 SL. I'm low on cash at the time being, but I want to do something to give my car a little more pep..or something.

get yourself a custom exhaust system or an intake, I think that'll do it for ya.

I'm Right There With Ya Man. As Far As I've Figured Out Thats The Way To Go. Intake & Exhaust. Then Go From There And Of Course Don't Waste Money On Anything That Sound Too Good To Be True Because Usually It Is.

just out of curiosity, those chips they sell on ebay that supposedly add 20HP...do they actually work?

the chips are a complete waste of money, it's a 5 cent resistor that you can get from radioshack, and I think all it does, is fool the computer in thinking that your accelerator cable is down less than it actually is. Don't buy it.
Also, like talskinny said, you could get a shot of n2o but don't go anything more than a 50 shot, and make sure your car's in good running condition.

Well what kind of resistor is it? I mean if it's so chep then why not just buy it and hook it up? Or is there something about it that really doesn't work? I'm curious because I would like a few more HP too, and if this thing really DOES work, what kind of resistor is it, how do I install it, etc.etc.etc. (P.S.) My car's a 02 Suzuki Grand Vitara, I was searching for forums that talked about rigging up your own resistor, so thought you guys could help. Thx

Lets put it this way. Its like a resistor of any kind. Some guy on the 300zx formums bought one. He said it said "Magnavox" on it....wtf. These people want those 99cents to buy themselfes a whopper. Just dont buy em. Or u can get hammer and break up your tv..and ull have a resistor...well not really but its the same concept.
Buy a intake(dont spend to much)..buy ur self a catback..and then go from there..they are the cheapest things. Meaning they give u the cheapest horsepower but u did ask for cheap.

a cone intake (any intake, get the cheap kind b/c K&N is just a name, intakes are all the same) will run ya about 40-60 bucks.
a testpipe (replaces your catylitic converter) will run you about 30-60 bucks. quick easy hp there.
plenum spacer...i personally wouldn't do it, no noticeable power increase. simply moves to torque peak lower in the rpm curve.
suspension upgrades greatly enhance the handling. makes it much more fun to drive. www.3sxperformance.com has the front and rear sway bars.

I would make sure your car is in perfect tune before adding mods...
Your car is only as strong as its weakest link...
Plan ahead for service too...(Timing belt)
Enjoy her!
