Wiper Problem

I have an 86 GT that has a wiper problem. They refuse to turn off. If I manually hold the wiper stalk so that it is just past OFF (Just before "MIST"), then they will stay off. I replaced the stalk, but it does the same. Any ideas?

Welcome to AF!
when you say "stalk," I take it you mean the 'multi-function' switch which is the wiper/cruise/turn signal switch.
the wiper is controlled I believe by a relay, which may have given out, and so once it gets the signal from the turn switch, it justs goes hot all the time. the relay will be available at most auto parts for about $5-10 USDollars, as it may also apply to many GM vehicles, and many items in yours: fuel pump relay, ignition, A/C hi-lo fan, may use the exact same relay.
if you have a fuse/relay box schematic, and find out it is the same as others in your car, swap it out for something you know to be working.
if there is no change in your wiper dilemma, then it isn't the relay, and may be the actual motor (or if this has been changed to an aftermarket one) or a fuse within the motor.
if you don't have your relays labeled or schematic, post back, and I can scan one and email it to you.
hope this helps,
chris

Is this a "pluse" type wiper--I.E. one with the delay option?
