1992 Honda Accord Transmission?

My son has a 92 Honda Accord.
Problem: (other than the fact that my husband is trying to fix this himself)
The car will start and you can drive it... the gears change sluggishly.. not clean... then sometimes when it shifts it's as though it's going to neutral. You can turn the car off.. restart and problem solved... then within 5 miles it's stops again.
Ideas please... ???
My son is leaving for college in a week... and if it doesn't get fixed I'm pretty sure I'll have to send my husband with him... hmmmm second thought take your time... ::grin:::
