If an egine component was getty ready to fail (bearings going bad) would it throw a code. I'm particulary interested in the PS pump and water pump. Or, would it throw a code only after the part failed. Thanks

You'll only get codes for things that are electronicly monitored, powersteering pump, water pump aren't monitored.

I've used an automotive stethascope to pinpoint bearing noises - cheap

I've used one as well. Not a lot of luck pinpoint the noise with that.

But, I think I figured out, more or less what the noise is...

Look familliar? It's the water pump pully. And, there is a good amount of play in it. I'm surprised that no one corrected me when I said that I thought the water pump is on the drivers side.

um - water pump IS on the driver's side. That looks like the idler pully on the passenger side; no?

tjm, I always THOUGHT the pump is one the drivers side. That's what I've been reading in a lot of posts. But, I have a printout of the 2002 3.5 engine that I got from the dealership showing the exploded view of the engine. But, the damn thing shows the water pump as being attached to the passenger side of the block. Of course, I may be mistaken....Let me see if I can post the diagram online so you can see what I am seeing.

4.0 engines have the water pump on the drivers side run off one of the front cam-shafts by a little belt. The 3.5 has it on the passenger side run by the serpentine belt with the other stuff.

Lol, don't worry. I went to a different dealer today and asked the guys in the service dept. He said that with the exception of the 2002 3.5, all Auroras had the water pump on the driver's side. But, you were right about one thing. Wha I had highlighted in that one picture wasn't the water pump pulley. I highlighted the wrong one.

Well, I eliminated, or at least pin pointed one of my most disturbing sounds. What sounded like a loud whiny noise turned out to be the AC clutch. I think it just needs to be adjeuted. When the commpressor is off, I hear whining, as soon as it turns on, the whining goes away. Of course I still have a variety of other noises to work out.
