Hey all new to the forum here, Looking to pry some Info out of ya all. I Recently aquired a 69 GTO. Car is in great shape needs very little unfortunately the one thing it does need is a frame.
Now im in the process of trying to find a frame. Ive had numerous people tell me theres quite a few different models that used the same frame Im sure it would be easier (and cheeper) if I went to the scrap yards and said I need this, this or this
Right now I know The GTO Tempest. Any one have any Info on other frames that will fit
Thanks in advance Looking forward to this project

Your in luck, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Chevy A Bodys are all the same.

Your going to look for a Chevelle or Le mans/tempest, Cutless. If your lucky you will be able to find a conv. frame that is boxed or a HD frame that is also boxed.

It will be boxed between the front and rear, the 2 longest frame rails are C shaped normaly but some HD frames and conv. frames are boxed. They are alot stronger.

The place to watch for damage or rust is the front left and right sides right behind the front tires, dose yours have damage here?

It's going to be a hard job to do this, as I did it with jack stands and 5+ jacks. You will need new body bushings also.

Good luck, if you have any questions please ask.

Thanks for the reply This should make it quite a bit easier to find what im looking for.
I know this is a huge job but I couldent pass it up This car was semi redone in 89 body, interior, drivetrain, glass and chrome all new or repaired. Its an older retired couple they lost interest in it due to medical problems. It sat in his yard since 92 in that time tires went flat and it sunk in the dirt. so the frame was sitting on the ground for about 13 years.
He called me a couple weeks ago and asked me to help him pull it out of the yard so he could sell it. Once we got it to the driveway you could see the rear of the car was damn near on the ground the frame was broke right behind both doors rusted right through. He was so discouraged he told me to take it home with me.... I blew it off as he was just mad and talkin..but he called the other day and asked when i was going to get it out of his driveway...so I aquired a 69 GTO :grinyes:

Thanks again for the reply ramair one other question is there a year range to look for, Can I look for 68-70 or is it 69 specific

To an extent, what RA72 said is true. There are subtle differences between each family, when it comes to the frame. In general, though, he's right. '68-'72 should "fit". Be prepared to cut a bracket here and there, and add a bracket here and there. Nothing geometry-related.
All "A" body frames ('68-'72 w/2-door, NOT '64-'67) are the same size. "G" and "E" are not (Grand Prix, Monte Carlo, Riviera, etc.).
The convertible frame is a good idea if you're looking to road-race the car. It significantly rigidifies (is that a real word?) the whole package.
As you have aquired this car for nothing (literally, from what I read here ), I would suggest you find the correct parts and do a "correct" restoration on this car. You can't lose money, that's for sure! And the world has enough modified GTOs. The originals need to be saved for the next few generations to see what THE original muscle car really looks like!
A couple of good sites for accurate information are: performanceyears.com (also a very good supplier of parts specific to Pontiacs) and classicalpontiac.com (Ames Performance sponsors that one, also a good sopurce for Pontiac stuff)
I would avoid The Paddock, OPGI and Year One, as they mostly supply the Chevy crowd, and will substitute Chevy stuff when it "fits". PY and Ames won't do that.
Welcome to the happiest muscle car crowd on the planet! GTO is the name by which all other muscle cars are measured. And don't fall for the ignorant BS about not being able to make a Pontiac run or "just put a Chevy in it" or anything else that may lead you away from the truth... (!)

Mr.P is right, dont put a chevy in it, and yes 68-72.

I do know that the Chevy Monte Carlo will not work it has the "wagon" frame that has longer front rails, that will not work.

When doing my car I needed a steering box (manual), so I went to a kinda secert auto yard that was in PA that had/has? lots of A bodys but has more 50-60's then anything else, it was good and bad, because he has the stuff but he wants more then what it's worth, I know what you thinking about what I said, what I think it's worth.... I'm telling you he wants more a lot more then what it's worth.

But he gave me a price of $40 for the box that was still attached to a 70 Le Mans, he took his wrecker out and I was thinking he was going to cut it off since he said no to me taking it off and his wrecker had some tanks on it, but dude hooked up his F350 told me to get in, he put it down into 4wd and stabed the gas, I have to tell you that it had been raining about a week and his yard was full of knee need water holes.

This guy is about 400lbs 50's and has a unlit cigar, hes got this shitgrin on his face as I grabed his dash as we went into and out of this water hole, no mind you a 1970 lemas is behind us LOL, he looks behind us and says "well I hope we get the part of the car with the box on it back" I look and the frame had come apart and the hard top was the only thing keeping te other 70% of the car attached, since we hooked up at the front the car buckeled in the middle. now the next hold we went into ripped off the roof at the A pillers and we had the front of the car kind draging behind us, it was like the movie "deep star 6" when the monster bit dude in the bubble diveing suit.

Well we did get back to the office with my part, and he did cut the part off the frame rail.

For the show I gave him an extra $5, as that was a ride that you only see in the movies!

So I know how the frame craps out from sitting in mud,, most of the cars at his place we sitting in mud, most were rabbitt homes.

My frame on my GTO on the front driverside firewall body mount showed a little more rust in one spot, nothing to worrie about, but I cleaned it out, maybe the size of a nickel was left, so I welded it up and painted it.

The car was from FL and the frame showed light surface rust, but maybe the way it was parked or something it seems that a small puddle had formed in that place and made a hole...

Take pictures for yourself and maybe to post, would love to see thr car and what you do to it!
