Honey comb issues and engine running hot

I have a 97 blazer with the vortec engine. My truck has been in the shop now for 4 weeks originally they had to replace the computer , sensor, module etc now that it is running, the engine runs hot and shoots black stuff out the exhaust (they believe part of the honeycomb). It starts to die out after 25mph The mechanic has no idea what the problem is and said the honeycomb is now black. any clue as to what I can tell them to speed up the process before I shell out 600.00 bucks more? Let Me know thanks!!

There are reputable mechanics out there, and even reputable dealerships; sounds to me, tho, like yours is working bassackwards. First, I'd replace the O2 sensors, there are 2. they are about 40 bucks each but the do go out. once this is done it takes about 2 days of driving for the problem to go away. HOWEVER, logic dictates that since yours is running hot, you need to replace the catalytic converter. In fact you probably need to do both... the bad O2 sensors overloaded the cat and fouled it. Those things are only good for about 60K, and I imagine yours is past that lol....

Yes, I don't stand for a mechanic telling me he has no idea what's wrong and you shouldn't either!! Your not paying them so you can come on this forum and ask questions about a problem their supposed to be diagnosing. Kick that mechanic to the curb!!

Allow me to "third" that...the next thing you should replace is your mechanic, if you haven't already.

I'm not one myself, but I would think that a properly trained & equipped mechanic should be able to nail your problem in under 4 weeks.

Thanks for you help...Well now they decided to take it to a GM dealership and use their diagnostic machines to find out what is going on with it. They were checking the engine codes and the codes were saying tha the Crank position sensors were bad. Which is one of the parts they originally checked. They were saying that they may have to check the timing chain to make sure it hasn't skipped a link. Which I do not want because I am paying MORE for labor. What do you think.

I don't think you should be paying them anything extra until they find the problem.

It is not your responsibility to keep on paying them until their idiot butts find the issue.

I agree, your getting raped. Sounds like your truck is running really rich. Is your vortec the one with the throttle body right in the center of the manifold or is the throttle body on the front?
