i was looking over old threads and retrying some suggested things and tried what iroc said about the two pins in dlc and finally got it right and got the code 33 which could either be maf or map according to the book i have. could either of these cause a no start?

What year, type of motor/injection system?

MAF voltage reading high...replace the MAF power and burn off relays.

not likely. I was driving mine without the maf since it was burnt, but it was a 6 then. I believe the perfomance would be affected. It would run leaner relying on O2 sensor only.
If thats a no start check for loose connections, the battery(sometimes the engine will crank but the plugs wont fire), your ignition module, presence of fuel pressure.

+Sometimes a bad fuel pump relay or oil pressure switch will create this problem or exessive cranking time
Any engine will run if theres gas and a spark.

Any engine will run if theres gas and a spark.

If you have excessively high/low fuel pressure, poor fuel atomization, weak/irratic spark, or incorrect timing; your car may seem to be getting both "gas and spark" but may not run.

To my knowledge the ecm in his car does not cut spark due to low oil pressure.

Being that there is a code 33, something is wrong with the MAF circuit which you will need to fix whether it runs or not. It better to do what Morley has suggested and replace the relays, than spend $100 on a new MAF and find out it's just a bad relay.

it does thats why a bad relay can cause long starting periodes, The engine wont fire untill certain oil pressure is reached. And thats in combination of things can lead to no start.
Also if the spark is weak it may fire a bit too.Furtermore, incorect timing can be an issue only if you messed with it, right?

Anyway a bit more info would be helpful.

I'd still replace those relays.

Does the engine crank? Have you checked for spark/fuel pressure?

ok, a Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) operates by sending an electrical current through a platnum wire thats about as thick as a hair, maybe less, airflow over that wire cools it, so the computer can determine by how much current it has to pass through the wire to keep it a certain temperature how much air is flowing into the engine by cross referencing it with the measured air temperature. that wire can sometimes get dirty, so everytime you shut the engine off, the burn off relay superheats that wire to like 2000 degrees or something for a split second to burn off any debris that might throw off the reading. savy?

as far as a junkyard unit, make sure they have a return or swap policy for defective units, 30 bucks is a helluva lot cheaper than the 300 for a new one, but if it dosnt work you just lost three dozen doughnuts.

also the burn off relay is not in the MAF sensor, you might not have to replace that, the relay is probly a $2.oo at the chevy parts counter. id go that route first.
