Custom Tune

I finaly got my custom pcm tune yesterday and i'm impressed. My power band is now smooth and solid from 0-120+... car never gets above 170 degrees.... no annoying shift light.... egr stuff is eliminated from the computer... it's just great. Easiest mod ever put on my car too.... the hardest part was getting the p.o.s. laptop to start up..... I highly recomend getting a custom tune....

Damn.. I want one bad too, I guess you also need a friend with a laptop or get one yourself to tune it?

Theres 2 ways to do it, you can either send your pcm away and have it tuned or if you have a laptop with the correct cable you can install the tune yourself in like 2 minutes....

Either that or get a really long ass cord that is the correct one and connect it to your computer, park your car next to your window and do it there. Wonder if it would work.

See, who recommended the tune from that guy. I am the all knowing super mod. Damn I need a giant S & M for my chest

... well you could always take your computer outside ..... but you still need to buy the data cable....

93 - F-body have a removable prom. You can just order a eprom and have it programmed and shipped right to your door. No cable necessary. www.pcmforless.com (http://www.pcmforless.com) does those too.

tunes are sweet i got mines done around march, updated it 2 weeks ago, and u can run it from your bedroom and park the car outside your window and do it..as ghetto as it sounds my friends laptop was acting silly and we didnt feel like taking his computer apart and bringing it into the garrage so we just pulled the car around to the side of the house (only do this if u own your property your house sits on), and sending your pcm away blows, then your cars down while its gone, and when u get it back something may not be right then u gotta send it off again and more down time. burning tunes isnt that great, i think every tune should be to each car, telling someone what u want then sending it to them isnt that great to me for the fact that what u think isnt what the car accepts all the time and adjusting is allways needed.= a wast of alot of time, grab u a hp tuner set and do it yourself...the best way to go

did u go to rev to get it done?drvingstorm i think i met u before if u did. i remember a car that looks just like yours. but like i said he is the only guy in this part of the country that does it for our cars, the mustang guys have a few different people down here they can go to, but its a bit harder for us

Bryan from pcmforless did drvngstorm's, I know cause I sold him the pcm and recommended Bryan.

Can you just get the cord and software fora laptop and plug it into your pcm and just mod w/ software or do you have to get a new pcm?

FormulaLT1
08-19-2005, 06:58 PM
You can tune with your current PCM but I sold him a OBD 1 LT1 PCM which allows for better and more accurate tunes. You get like 10 more horse out of a OBD 1 tune than a obd 2

unfortunately i'm not from that part of the country anymore... i'm now in college at the university of arkansas, while i was there i unfortunately never got a chance to go by revextreme... if i had gotten my car reliable a little bit earlier than i did (i actually got it reliable only about 4 days or so before i made the trip to college) i woulda dropped by revextreme to at least dyno my car... maybe even do a little bit of additional tuning... but like i said i'm now in fayetteville arkansas livin the college life :grinyes:

I trust neither of these.

They work well enough, but they would do nothing for me but get my car running. You spend a decent amount of money for this tune, and yet they have no idea what your car does on a dyno. Mail order tunes work good for cars with no internal mods.
Dyno tune is the way to go, at least for me.

Bryan from pcmforless uses dyno results from plenty of testing to come out with his mail order tunes based on your mods. He is one of top tuners for some of the fastest F-bodys out there and I can tell you from first hand knowledge as well as many other f-body owner can tell you. They saw very small gains from dyno tuning after using one of Bryans tunes. Even though your right you will get it perfect with a dyno tune but for a lot less your getting as close as you can possibly get.

PCMforless is the only one I would use mail order.
They do a good job.

I just can't see sending it off. For a little more money I can have it dyno tuned local and get those last couple ponies.
Just my opinion.

Well I think the biggest factor here is time, thats what we're all looking at, which is why im with Curtis on this about spending the extra bucks just to get it right then and there.

I'm with philly... plus having realtime data logged as you drive in your own car and tuning with that just makes more sense to me than sending it out to get sort of generic tune on what "should be" good for a car with "these" mods... too vague for me

bryan from pcmforless really does do an awesome job tho, especially if you use relatively common parts... i don't really consider it to be a generic tune, he really does know his shit. i never drove my car without the tune, but i can attest to the fact that my car runs as smoothly as if it came from the factory with the mods i have on it... very smooth powerband, don't throw any codes at all, idles nice... i mean i can't completely describe it but i really would recommend bryan to anybody wanting to tune their modded lt1's

I hear you but he still doesn't have any datalogging off your car, can't read and tune the A/F exactly as it is with a wideband he can only guess, other things like that I feel make a custom/dyno tune far superior to a mail order one. Dyno tunes cost more tho

Savage Messiah
08-20-2005, 08:53 PM
and also custom tune I went with instead of dyno not just because of price but because on a dyno you can't see how your car runs on the road, since it is my DD and all

damn man i didnt know u left the tampa area, never did get to see that car, i would have loved to see that thing on our dyno, the guys would have loved that car. we dont have many 3rd gens in our club at all, hell i dont think i really even seen one. good luck in school, maybe ill catch u when u are here on a visit. and mail tunes are ok, but like i said, every car id different no matter how common the part u use. dyno tuning followed by driving it on the street is the best way to tune your car.

What programs are needed to do a custom tune from a laptop or pc? And where can you get a dyno tune, from a track or something like that?

Link85x
08-22-2005, 08:36 AM
Also, would i be able to send my pcm from my 87 iroc and get that tuned for whatever mods i have?

philly rs
08-22-2005, 07:07 PM
well for the dyno tune, first off u need to call some of your local rod shops and see who in your area has a dyno. u cant dyno tune without the dyno. 2nd u must find out if your car can be tuned with a computer. like me, my 96rs could not be tuned at all, so i got a 97 3800 pcm and put it in my car because that could be tuned. so u need to find out who if anyone does make's the tune for your car. i got hp tuners. and in theory yes u can send your pcm to get tuned for what mods u have, but like i said u have to be verry exact when u explain what u have, and what u are trying to get. because once they send it back to u, u have to pay to have them twerk it if its not perfect. it costs down time and hella cash flow

Right here is another HP tuners user/supporter, find someone in your area who uses it tho uz its expensive to buy... go to their website and forum and youll be boggled by the amount of knowledge and info

Yeah, im know i would have to tune it once i set and done with the major mods. How much would a dyno tune run you, ball park figure?

philly rs
08-23-2005, 05:22 PM
well ill tell u this...3 runs on our dyno with air and fuel readings is 70 bucks for 3 pulls. our tuner, he starts at 500 bucks depending on what u need/want. it aint cheap, u gotta remember, not many people are doing them at the level the big doggs will use. u dont want jim from around the block to do it, u need to find a guy with a great rep for it. like i said our tuner has been in f body and vette mags so he's good and people come far far away to get him to tune a car.

cuda_dude
08-23-2005, 08:14 PM
for what i saved i'll stick with an online pcm tune.... i gained power and was happy with everything else.... $75 isnt bad for 15+ gained hp and unlimited tunes after.... but granted if i was building a super high hp car i would spend the extra to get a dyno tune....
