i have a 1979 pontiac firebird 301 v-8 2 bbl 89.000 miles ......when it is cold it runs alright but when you hit the gas is starts to die. when it is completly warmed up....takes about 5 mins.....it runs just like new no problems at all....and also in addition, there is a rattling clicking sorta noise when you rev it up but goes away when completley warmed up....dont know where its coming from??? any suggestions?

could be all sorts of problems. more info would be good. the clicking sound could be coming from the lifters. your engine dieing when hitting the gas could be to much gas upon acceleration. depending what carb you are running the carb is shooting to much gas into the engine.can be adjusted.

i dont think the sound is coming from inside the engine i thinks its something on the outside but what...i dont know....but like i said it ONLY does it when the engine is cold both problems only happen when its cold...what kind of info would you need.....the carb is the orig 2 bbl carb

I would check the heat riser in the exhaust manifold. Not sure which side yours is on (400 is on the driver's side) it could be loose and after it warms up the spring tightens up. They will rattle when worn/loose.

As for the cold running problem, more than likely the accelerator pump is not working properly. When cold, an engine takes more fuel to run smooth. And, if the heat riser is not sending warm exaust through the intake manifold heating chamber, it can cause an extended warm up period. If the pump is not spraying enough fuel, the engine will bog. The choke may also need to be adjusted.
