I just ended up with a '03 gmc sierra 5.3. I have a bang or clunk 70% of the time when it shifts 2 to 3.
Do you Silvy guys get the same crap? If so, has anyone found out the real cause not the dealers bull.
Finally trade my blazer k1500 with 130,000 on and running strong. Kept blowing rears.

2-3 clunk is pretty common. My truck does it intermittently, generally under light throttle. Trans gives me all kinds of noise. I'm hoping it blows up before my 60k GMPP runs out =). 2-3 clunk does not indicate impending failure, I think. I hope.

I have a 2005 4X4 Z71 with 3800 miles on it " Purchased 05/22/05 ". It started banging and clanging at around 1700 miles, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 2nd and 1st to 2nd....90+ % of the time. Of corse I am told this is normal. It is the most annoying vehicle i have owned. You can honestly hear the transmission clinging as it changes gears.....It is nearly embarrising when driving in a neighbor hood. I also had the stall problems when pulling out at times, so the dealer reprogrammed the software. Now since the updated software, it literally hammers when down shifting from 2nd to 1st. It down shifts to 1st at around 12MPH. The update did seem to smooth out the upshifting clanging......SLIGHTLY, but the down shifting of 2nd and 3rd are worse and 1st is UN-belivable....it actually feels as if it surges as it hit 1st.

Please anyone with serious advise or experience with this problem....is it normal ? and just how loud should this be ? .....please reply as to what if any solution.

I think you need to take it back to the dealer NOW!!!! My is a little bang or if I'm light on the gas a little cland on the up shift. I was hoping to find someone who tore it down already. Guess I'll have a winter project.

You need to * replace with a nickel plated yoke.
* replace transfer case fluid to new Auto-Trac 2 :2cents:
==============================================
* nickel-plated slip yoke part number #12477702 Must Be Ordered With U-Joint Kit # 12479126
* transfer case fluid
* Auto Trac II blue fluid

All this for the 1500

Its not the slip yoke. The noise is internal due to the introduction of negative torque during the upshift and its most pronounced in 4x4's, and apparantly normal for the time being according to tsb's. My 05 started doing this at around 1500 miles and only under very light throttle pressures. During normal acceleration its ok as well as when its in tow haul mode. The clank on mine seems to move around sometimes seeming like it coming from the rear of the transmission, sometimes like its coming from the front diff, and sometimes like its coming from the engine bell housing area. There is no jerking in the drivetrain, just a clank like someones tapping on the tranny with a hammer during the 2-3 upshift.

2-3 clunk with the 4wd trucks and the 4l60e has been around for a quite a while, tolerance stacks in the trans and transfer case are the cause and I don't think there has been any correction, Some vehicles are worse than others but besides the annoyance there is no long term problem here.

Not to be rude, but if your referring to Hyertech, that thing sucks big time. And it won't fix anything at all.

A/T - 4L60-E/4L65-E, 2-3/3-2 Shift Clunk Explanation

Bulletin No.: 01-07-30-042B

Date: January 16, 2004

INFORMATION

Subject:
Information on 2-3 Upshift or 3-2 Downshift Clunk Noise

Models:
2004 and Prior Light Duty Trucks
2003-2004 HUMMER H2
with 4L60E or 4L65E Automatic Transmission (RPOs M30, M32)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add the 2004 model year. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-042A (Section 07 Transmission/Transaxle).

Some vehicles may exhibit a clunk noise that can be heard on a 2-3 upshift or a 3-2 downshift.

During a 2-3 upshift, the 2-4 band is released and the 3-4 clutch is applied. The timing of this shift can cause a momentary torque reversal of the output shaft that results in a clunk noise. This same torque reversal can also occur on a 3-2 downshift when the 3-4 clutch is released and the 2-4 band applied. This condition may be worse on a 4-wheel drive vehicle due to the additional tolerances in the transfer case.

This is a normal condition. No repairs should be attempted

I'm sure that this has been revised to add the 05 model year also.

My 02 clunked and my 05 does also. Never had any trouble with either, It's just so annoying.
