please help you olds gurus im baffled....

my wife has a 97 88LS....the car runs wonderfully as it has since we purchased it brand new....just one problem and has been going on for 2 months now...intermittantly for no reason while going down the road the car shuts off like someone hit a killswitch! you start the car back up up immediately no problem....it might be a week, a month, a day then it will do it again!...i have changed all 3 dizzy blocks,the fuel pump and filter.....and it still does it! im CLUELESS...please offer advice im listening!

Best to have someone do a diagnostic to see what codes might be coming up. From there you will have a direction to look at. Personally I"m not very up on OBD2 Vehicles but the basics are all the same. Something else to look at is on another '97 post, someone found a loose ground. Worth looking into.

If you lose all electrical power you need to check the connections at the battery and grounds at the engine. If the car only shuts off and the accessories continue to work try the crank position sensor located on the front of the engine. One last thing, check the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. The can cause similar problems as a CPS when going bad for some reason.

when the car dies the accessories stay on...so maybe the crank sensor? would that cause the car to die but immediately restart when you crank it?

The sensor briefly shuts down and then resets itself. Unfortunately it will continue to get worse as it continues to degrade. This is a common problem and once the CPS is replaced the stalling problem usually goes away completely. The other possibility is the ignition module under the coils, it can overheat but usually causes different problems than you describe. The CPS will not usually throw a computer trouble code until it fails completely.
