1997 4.6 - one morning won't start but turns over. its not the ignition coils-has spark and mechanic says no data from computer. Was there a federally mandated warranty extension on the computer. Has there been a problem with this component on the thunderbirds. Any other tips would be appreciated. Thanks

I had a similar problem on my '96.
The engine would turn over but not fire.
It turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor.

w/ a bad crank sensor you wont have any fire. it sounds like he has that.

was there some sort of federally mandated extension of the warranty period of the computers? Whats the average life of this component?

no warranty extension... on older cars (80s) you usually see 1 or 2 cars a week in the shop with bad ecm. i work on these everyday and have not seen a bad pcm in a thunderbird v8 EVER. i would get second opinion from different shop because if you had bad pcm you wouldnt get spark at all ---my guess with no data condition some aftermarket scan tools (i have three different scanners) dont communicate correctly. i would be leaning toward fuel problem (relay, fuses, filter, pump assembly)

I'm having the same problem on a 94lx 4.6. We changed the crank sensor, the pcm, the ircm, the fuel pump and relays. Now i'm looking at the ignition switch. Have you had any luck getting yours started?
