fuel problem?

I posted this message in the Concorde forum, but haven't had any luck. I thought I'd give it a whurl in here. See if any of you mechs. can maybe diagnose my problem....

So, Here's the deal.

On the way to work I filled up an empty tank of gas. 5 miles down the road the car putz' out. It starts to run real bad, RPMs jumping all over the place, the car lunges a little, then regardless of how much, or little I push on the accelerator the car wont go over 2grand.
I coast over to the side of the road and take a look. I find that my AC belt is gone. The car starts, but runs like complete crap. I was able to drive the car halfway up the rollback, before it would no longer pull it's weight.

What I have done so far is: pumped out old gas, replaced fuel filter, added 5 gal premium and started.

For a second it sounded like the engine was running better, but overall I had no change in symptoms, the car still runs like crap. I did notice that while the car was running that the cruise control light would come on, then go off a few times, as well as a couple other lights. There are no engine codes popping up.

Is the AC belt related to this problem or is it coincedence? What step should I take next. any help or suggestions will be welcomed and appreciated.

Could the A/C belt have taken out some wires or sensors that are critical? You might look for some loose/frayed wires in the A/C area just to make sure if you haven't already....

I'll check for wire connections tomorrow...

... It didn't overheat, but what is this "safe mode" you're talking about?

Thanks for the replies so far... any more would also be appreciated.

hes talking about a chrysler concorde.....not a truck...nice try though...

well some computer controlled vehicles go into a safe mode and reduce engine speed when they over heat either that or it just starts running like crap.....

Did you run the gas level down to really really really low? If so - 2 things could have happened - you sucked sludge from the bottom of your tank into the fuel pump - thus limiting fuel flow thru pump. Or you overheated the fuel pump (gas acts as the coolant for the fuel pump - low gas means low coolant - and pump gets hot). If the fuel pump overheated - it could continue to work but have a warped impellor which would reduce fuel flow. Final thought - do you have 2 fuel filters and BOTH got plugged up - but you only changed one. Again - it would limit fuel flow.

Seems too coincidental that within 5 miles after fill up - this happens - and not before fill up - something about gas or fuel flow must be part of the problem. AC belt seems unrelated - unless you did take out sensors with a wild belt swinging around. Just my thinking - I'm not a wrencher anymore

I had similar symptoms in my Mazda when my timing belt jumped a couple of teeth. (My AC belt didn't break, but everything else sounds similar). Could that be a possibility?
