Fuel tank

So here I am trying to get the fuel tank off the car so that I could change the fuel pump and low and behold the two strap bolts are next to impossible to get off.

If anyone here has any ideas that may help I'm listening. What is happening with the bolts is that they turn but the nut on top is also turning. From what I understand there is some sort of restraint that is supposed to keep the nut still but I assume that broke off. There is next to no room to put a wrench on the nut to stop it from moving.

So how so I get a bolt off. I should mention I'm right next to a gas tank so I don't think a torch is a great idea.

Best way is to cut the straps off, remove the gas tank and then you can use a torch or whatever you have to remove the bolt/nuts.

the bolts holding on the straps are steel case hardened so they are pretty much impossible to cut with a saw blade or even chisel. i found using a torch to heat up the nuts and some penetrating oil works well. good luck and wear eye protection.

I drilled and grinded the heads off the bolts. Went through a few drill bits doing it. After that, on all my other vehicles, I greased up the bolts so they dont rust like that.

I'm having the same problem. The difference is I'm dropping the tank because the steel lines coming out of the tank are rotted and leaking, so now I can't use a torch. Any suggestions?

Wow, thanks for this info. I took mine off a few days a go and they came off fine.

Holy crap this was my post about 2 or three years ago. I have changed my name since. And I also don't own that car anymore. Went to car heaven.

Anyhow what I ended up doing was cutting the straps. there is a type of a retaining washer or something? that was rusted and when I went to turn the bolts off they just broke and therefore the bolt just kept turning and not loosening.

You more than likely have the same situation that I had with the turning bolts and therefore your only option as I see it is cutting the straps.

Easy job after the straps are cut.

Rasp,

Thanks for the feedback but you are ware you can only have one member name and we do not allow multiple AF accounts? I'm assuming you lost your password or whatever your excuse is so let me know if you want the two names merged so you do not lose the total post count, etc. One member name of your choice will have to be terminated/closed.
