Well, it's not a car. Its a 1960 John Deere 435. My dad loves antique tractors, and this is his second. His first is a 1944 John Deere B. This tractor was a hotrod of its time.:grinyes: Its got a 106 ci supercharged two-cylinder two-stroke Detroit (General Motors) diesel engine:evillol:. The supercharger is really there to create the natural vacume a two-stroke needs. I would take a car over a tractor anyday, but I absolutely love this one. Aside from the decals, the tractor is perfect in every way. My dad had been searching for a 435 for nearly six months now, and finally found one that caught his eye. His original plan was to buy an unrestored one, and completely restore it. The only problem is he couldn't find one with power steering, which is by far one of the most valued options the tractor had. There were only 4600 435s made so there arent many around. But after more looking he found this one...in central Iowa, only 2 1/2 hours from where we live. So we went and checked it out, and a week later he went back and bought it.

Now I don't know about any of you, but my brother and I share the love of antique tractors with my dad and will work to keep the hobby going. Whenever we go to shows, there are never any younger people that own the tractors. So it seems to me that the hobby will die out as the older owners grow older/die. So chances are, I will own a few oldies as I grow older.

Well, I'm done showing off my dad's toy, so lets hear what you guys think.

I was kinda hoping it would have been some gorgeous, hot young blonde that your dad likes to "have fun" playing with.

Once again, the internet disappoints me...:(

How the hell do you supercharge a 2 stroke? Wouldn't that just make a 2 stroke less effecient and less powerful?

In any case, that 1960 vintage engine should be just about as modern (and/or obsoloete) as GM's current engines.

Dyno that monster. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to see what its numbers are.

honda_racing101
08-17-2005, 05:07 PM
Well in 1960 it was rated at 37 pto horsepower.

And ec437-Like I said the supercharger is mostly for creating the natural vacume that a two-stroke needs.

You won't find torque numbers for tractors, just horsepower...All 2 Cycle Detroit's are supercharged, They don't work without them. Oh and nice tractor, all we use is John Deere......woot.

That's a pretty cool tractor. My school had an old fully restored John Deere. I don't remember what model it was though...

I remember when I raced 2 stroke nitro rc cars, forced induction does absolutely squat because the intake and exhaust valve are open at about the same time, therefore was really just added weight. Why does a tractor NEED one? :eek7: I'd think it has to do with being diesel or something, I'd really just like to know for the hell of it.

:rofl::rofl: Thats so funny cuz my dad and my brother do that shit. They race the riding lawnmower down tha road. My dad is too lazy to walk 2 blocks to tha stor so he will drive that mower to get a coke. I dont even live with tha man anymore and it still embarrises me. Whats even funnier is my town has a total of around 5000 people and almost all tha men drive them things around town. Sometimes the cops even do it....

A friend of mine had a 18hp V-twin mower that could do 55mph. :sunglasse

And jcsaleen, the tractor gets no were near 35 mph. 15 mph is probably closer to the top speed.

I believe it is a 2 CYCLE not a 2 Stroke, (please someone correct me if they are the same....) It is the way the old detroits are made...They won't run without them, They will even run upside down on their own engine oil I believe.

If you want to bastardize a blower off of a detroit, they make kits to put them on gasoline engines.

karmacae, are you saying people that own tractors live in hick towns? :grinno:

Whoa! Killer dude! Old tractors rule.

The nursery where one of my friends works has a Massey which I believe to be from the 40s (could be wrong) - still in daily operation. Not only is it still going strong, it flat out refuses to EVER get stuck anywhere, while all the new tractors get all their new fancy bits thoroughly lodged into the muck...

BTW - I think somebody's bicycle is about to get run over :D

honda_racing101

I knew someone would comment about the bike. :grinno:

Ok, heres another thing I am going to throw out about the old Detroit Diesels....They don't have Intake valves, the air enters the cylinders at the bottom of the stroke. Hence the blower mounted on the side of it, if you unbolted it, you would see a big ass hole in the block.

What do you guys think? I promise I'll have a better one later, even if we have to make a new video.
