Shocked Mustang Owner

I was browsing the forums and came across this thread in the mustang forum. Thought everyone would get a laugh from the kind of work they gotta put into their V6's to make them competitive against a GT (and keep in mind this guy had a standard tranny).

Thanks for the post, we Pontiac owners always like it when someone smokes a Mustang. They don't call it Pontiac Excitement for nothing!

what kind of 1/4 times do those gt's run stock
The best 1/4 mile and 0 - 60 mph times I've seen from the old magazines for a stock '97 - '03 GT is 15.9 secs with high 80 trap speeds. 0 - 60 mph - 7.7 secs. But it probably varies depending on who did the test and the conditions.

yeah so with that info then its obvious that the guy is probably a 16yr old who just got his liscense and cant drive. because a manual 99-04 v6 stang should run a mid 15. so even if he loses to the gp he shouldnt be getting killed... maybe that gp had some mods done to it.

Should run and what it does run are two different things. Both cars seem evenly matched in stock form. And in the end the deciding factor will probably be the driver.
But in this case and as the Mustang owner put it, he got beat.

I'm not bnaylor, nor am I an expert on cars, but I can help you on this one. There's a sticky about the supercharger idea at the top of the forum. Basically, you need to do an overhaul of your engine to put the GTP supercharger on and not kill your engine. There are turbos and other superchargers available for our engines, but I have a feeling you don't want to spend that kind of money. As for cheap mods, there are some you could do. First would be to put a Cold Air Intake or Fenderwell Intake in, the CAI would be a little more effective but the FWI would be dirt cheap. Also, you could get the U-bend in the exhaust replaced by a straight pipe, or just get a custom exhaust put on. You could also order a DHP chip, that adds 10-12 hp if I remember right. Thats all the basic stuff, the real mechanics on here can help you with the stuff like replacing cams and all that other stuff I don't quite understand yet.

I'm not an expert on Grand Prixs either but I think BigBL87 is pretty much on target. Whatever mods you do will help and is relative to what you have to spend on it. The DHP PCM is a must to take advantage of any intake or exhaust mod.
Also I'd recommend a Hi-Flow CAT with 2.5 downpipe and 2.5 out to the stock mufflers over a CAT Back system. Delete the resonator or keep it if you do a lot of cruising or traveling.
If you have enough money go for headers. Its an easy 25 hp even on a NA Series II 3800. However, the install is a real PITA. I believe GTP Dad is still working on his and I just finished this past weekend.
Before I added a ZZP Phase 1 72mm throttle body and SLP headers my best ET is date was 13.68 @ 102 mph. 0 - 60 feet time of 2.09 secs. I'm taking it out this weekend for another time trial.
Whatever you decide good luck and kill those Mustangs. :lol2:

ok smartass i was trying to not start a flame war... i guess i have to say it like this... a 99-04 v6 stang runs a mid to low 15 1/4. not should, it does. you happy? now if that kid cant drive it changes things. and if that gp had mods it does also, obviously.

This is a 0-60 and 1/4 mile time I found at http://www.albeedigital.com/supercoupe/articles/0-60times.html
1999 Ford Mustang Convertible V6 8.6 16.5
Thats a Ford website, so I doubt that the result is much higher than an optimum run. Seeing as its a convertable, its about 180 lbs. heavier than a hardtop, but thats not going to make a second difference in the 1/4 mile time. The site never specified if it was stick or auto, my guess is auto. Once again, I dunno if that would make a 1 second difference, maybe it would, I'm a newb to cars. I'm not tryin to start a flame war, like you said, I'm just providing test numbers.
My guess is for an stick, the 1/4 mile in bnaylor's edmunds.com article sounds right compared to the time I found for the auto.

Plasimatic, the guy who's mustang got beat, said this:
my stang is standard.he really beat me on highway more than take off.take off he was a car length in front
Now, most of the GP guys know that the GP's weakness is the top-end, so it seems wierd that if all the guy had on the GP was a CAI that he would pull the kid on the top end. I don't know much about 'stangs but I'm guessing they have a better top end than GP's do. Just food for thought.

I've heard the V6 Mustang called a chick car before but I've never really agreed with it. Ya, if you're going to mod it heavily the GT is the way to go. However, some of us cannot afford the gas for a V8 nor afford the car in the first place. When I was looking for a car, I wanted something sporty but not a gas hog. There were two Mustangs V6s at the dealership that I got my GP at, and I considered buying them for a while. That doesn't mean that I'm "girly", it just means that I don't need the extra power at extra cost, which is partly why I went with the GT and not the GTP. I personally like Mustangs, really they are the only Ford car I like, and would definitly consider one, V6 or V8, when I have to get rid of my GP. And as for people staying in their own forum, I like to jump between forums. I've been posting in the mustang thread linked to this for a little while now. Not trying to start a fight, I usually agree with you man, but I think you've gotten a little too hostile on this one.
Really, I agree with everything you said up until the last 2 posts. Hope that didn't make you mad or anything, because I appreciate your advice and help.

I work several forums but I don't flame people and call them "smartass" or call them names. Read back and show me where I was hostile. Initially, I tried being nice to him until he fed us a line of B.S. on the 1/4 mile ET of a Mustang V6. Next time, I won't waste my time defending the GT which is a good alternative vehicle depending on your circumstances. I'd take it over a Mustang any day.
Personally, I really don't care if anyone agrees with me or not. We all are entitled to our opinions as long as it doesn't revert to name calling, personal attacks, etc. I never flamed the dude but he sure did me.
Threads like this belong in forums like "Street Racer" in which I avoid. This is a forum for help, not inane B.S.

I see the "chick car" overupdated forum topic has migrated from the Grand AM to the Mustang.
Good work :) ...too bad I probably had something to do with it too since I started the convo in there. I totally agree. We all have a preference over cars and love/hate models for our reason. I didn't see you act in a hostile manner whatsoever Bnaylor. Some just act disrespectful and that's a shame.

Thanks for the moral support Jessep28. Whether the Mustang V6 is a "Chick" mobile is just based on my observations and may not have any real basis in fact. But I sure like the hot babes that I see driving 'em. :lol2:
The issue of Ford v GM cars has always been a hotly debated issue. But if you mess with a Hornet's nest, you have to expect the consequences.

IF he mis-interpreted you calling his car a chick car as you calling him girly, he has self-image issues that no one on this forum is capable of helping him with. I agree with Jesse that you never flamed or insulted him, so he needs to relax. There MAY have been a slight insinuation on your part Bnaylor, but he got hostile first. V-6 stangs are not that fast, I beat my Uncles v-6 stick convertible with my 91 Cavalier auto convertible, so if you want to race your Mustang, get a V-8

I agree with what richtazz said, Stang00 got hostile first, and I didn't take that into consideration. I agree the V6 'stangs aren't fast, but like I said, I don't think it's a chick car. I apologize for what I said and will read into things more carefully before I post something like that again.

My car is the four door version of yours Big BL, same color, wheels and all. No apologies necessary, some people are way too sensitive, and you never stepped out of line.

BTW - BigBL, I like that anti-riceburner graphic. But I just want you to know I do have a riceburner...lol. :lol2:

Its not so much anti-riceburner as it is anti-ricer. I'm assuming you dont have a car thats riced, seeing as you're smart enough to own a GP. Thanks though.

I sort of know what a ricer is but maybe you can enlighten me further. I envision some kid with a Honda Civic with a custom paint job, ground effects plastic all around, a tail wing, decals, 20 inch wheels and the loud annoying exhaust. One thing I know for sure is I'm too old to be one nor do I drive a rice-burner or Euro style car. My sons would probably dis-own me. I'll stick with Hot Rodding. But I've heard of GP ricers. I've even seen a cholo with low rider GP at a car show. Its funny when they go to bounce mode. I hope its a fad that will pass.
Here's a good one:

Ya, you pretty much got my definition of a ricer. That stuff can even be okay if the car has the speed and power to look that fast. Really, to me ricing is making a car look fast but doing little or no mods to make it actually fast. Me, personally, I prefer a clean look as I'd like to have a sleeper more than a pimped out car. I have seen riced GP's and it almost makes me cry, seeing what people have done to our beauty of a car.

For a good definition of "ricer" type cars, I recommend the following:
1) http://www.ricecop.com
2) Watch the movie Fast and the Furious. A lot of ricer import cars.
They unfortunately made a second one. The first car race scene in the 2nd one had cars just whipping around supposidlt at like 120 mph and they can jump a raised bridge at 120mph without just destroying the car and driver. If you want a good laugh, watch both as a marathon.

so calling someone a smartass, for making a smartass coment is being hostile? sorry if i took it that way but i did man so dont get worked up over it. now your next comment after that was completely sarcastic. now about bs. if you believe me that the 99-04 manual mustang runs a mid 15 1/4 then look it up. still the real issue here is about that car getting clobbered by a high 15 low 16 car. while it could get beaten, i can see that. it shouldnt be getting clobbered unless the guy cant drive... now as far as v6 stangs not being fast. agreed, by no means are they fast, but the 99-04 models are much quicker than the mid 90's model. so you cant group them together.your talking a 40hp or more difference depending on year. now ill admit i might have gotten a little to excited, because now after i read through the posts again i can see the way you ment for me to see it. i was pretty cranky before. as far as the 16.5 1/4 time posted before. it was a convertible and a auto. and im not bullshittin here... those autos really do suck really bad.
so maybe... we can get back to a decent conversation here. my bad about earlier.

now this straight out of a car and driver article, for my facts to back up my argument.
That performance would humiliate owners of the last V-6 Mustang we tested (a 145-hp manual back in May 1994), which scored an 8.3-second 0-to-60 time and a 16.5-second quarter-mile.
http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=16&article_id=9028
thats the webpage. that states than a 94 stang did that time. well that stang has 145hp, dont know the tq for it. the stang in question here has 193hp and 225ft-lbs of tq. so i see it very unlikely that it would be that slow.
there was a guy on a forum on revoltgaming.com or something like that i think that got the 1/4 time for a 99-00 mustang v6 with 190hp, 220ft-lbs of tq. he said it was 15.5 1/4 and 7s 0-60 standard tranny. he said he got his info off of autochannel.com. i looked on the website though and i couldnt verify it so i dont know if that is relevant...

My personal favorite anti-rice sire:
http://www.anti-rice.com/
Some of the comments are funny, some are stupid, but the pictures usually speak for themselves.
This is kinda beating a dead horse agian, but here's the 0-60 and 1/4 mile i got for a '95 3.8 'stang:
1995 Ford Mustang 3.8 9.9 17.3 (once again, tranny not specified)
Thats the same Ford site as last time. Stang00, I'm sure my fellow GP guys are getting tired of trading numbers, so lets keep the numbers in the Mustang thread this came from, because I'd still like to try to figure it out but the guys in here are getting tired of it. Post in the other thread if you wanna compare #'s with me.

It was what we call a tangent. I tend to veer off into non-topic related articles. Bnaylor wanted to know what an example of a "ricer" was then it spurred off into Fast and the Furious and anti-rice sites.

Another Mustang owner here. Who cares if a V6 Mustang was beaten by a Pontiac with a V6? The V6 Stang isn't made for "racing". The 16 year old kid probably can't drive to save his life. I had a Pontiac Firebird with a V6 and I was impressed with the power. GM always seemed to do go in the power department with their V6's compared to Ford. Hell my Mustang's a 4 cylinder, but I guess the turbo attached to it changes things a little. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/svoman2300/50564c77.jpg

If you really wanna know what your Grand Prix or Mustang does in the 1/4 mile with you behind the wheel take it out to the local dragstrip. I wouldn't depend on what some magazine publishes as the gospel or what J.B. puts on the Internet. There are too many variables in the real world.
Also if you note the guy with the Mustang V6 ran against a 2004 GP GT1 or 2. Here's some data out of Car & Driver below.
BTW - I was out at my local dragstrip today and noted a total absence of Grand Prix GTs and Mustang V6s. As usual the Camaros Z28s, Firebird Trans Ams, GTPs, Mustang GTs and Cobras were out in force.
Race safely and legally.

Speaking of the devil....welcome. :lol2: You should note that all the criticism of your driving came from your own fellow Mustang owners. When you say you are a good driver I believe you. Most of us in this forum are pretty cool.
If you ever decide to get a GP no matter what year or model, you are always welcome here. In the meantime there is nothing wrong with a Mustang V6. With under $1K in mods you can have it up to snuff in no time.
