96 jetta automatic transmission slip

Hi,

I've got a 96 jetta with an automatic transmission and it is slipping in the morning when it is cold. It slips when it first goes into gear and also sometimes from 1st to 2nd.

I've noticed, by looking around the internet, that this seems pretty common. But people never say how they got it fixed. Since this is a common problem what exactly in the tranny gets fixed? Low tranny oil? Valves?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Especially from anybody that has done the fixing or had it fixed. :)

Thanks

Hope it's just low oil, it is dificult enough just to check/change. The transmissions are known for failure.

Hey,

I just stopped by this forum to post a question about my 92 jetta and spotted this old post about my wife's 96 jetta.

We still have the car and it still slips a bit. Shortly after I posted that question I noticed that it was leaking oil. A problem with putting oil in is that this tranny is a sealed unit. So every few weeks for the past year I've been injecting oil in through an air vent at the top. There air vent is a little post covered with a plactic cap that pulls straight up and it is next to a second post with wires attached to it. I have to spend about 10 minutes injecting the oil in with a syringe, 5ml at a time. Over the past year I've gone through 1.2 liters of oil.
The special $20/liter oil. But $40 and 10 minutes every few weeks has kept this car going so I'm happy. (How do I know if I have the correct amount of oil in the tranny? I don't, I just guess it.)

Just thought I would post this follow up in case someone else runs into this problem. Although I suspect there are very few of these still on the road as a result of the tranny problem.
