93 taurus lx i took my grandmother to get her hair cut today with it and it started jerking violently and the check engine light came on which scared the shit out of my grandma what should i check and how can i run codes on this car??

Auto Zone will get the codes for you free of charge..
but go in when they aren't busy with customers.

A lot of AutoZone employees are jokes. Some do look like they know what they're doing, but they only seem to help women. You would probably have better results scanning them your self.
http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/ You may want to get a repair manual so you know the codes are correct, that's just general instruction. The hardest part is actually finding the self test connector. I am not certain about that model.
Did you get any check engine lights, smoke, or a speedometer failure? It could be over a dozen things... You may have to buy dianostic tools for finding the issue, like a fuel pressure gauge. But most certain scanning the codes is the first thing you should do. The VSS is a possibility, but I wouldn't go and have it replaced until you know for sure. From what I understand it's a PITA to change.
