Hey fellow artists, I've been away for a little bit. Sorry this isn't really art related but I think of you all as a little Art family.
It's a sad experience but I wanted to share. I went to P.R. on vacation for two weeks but the visit was bittersweet. In late June I lost my Grandmother to a bad respiratory infection. She had just turned 89 in April and she seemed fine for the following two months or so. I couldn't wait to get back to P.R this July with my family so we can see her again and spend time with her. My kids got to see her last year for their first memorable visit. She's always lived in P.R. and visited NY annually until her age wouldn't allow her; she stopped traveling and felt it was finally time to relax about 12 years ago.
When I got the bad news of her passing on June 26, a month before my 11th wedding anniversary and planned vacation, I became really distraught. We were all close to Grandma and I still recall the days when she helped raise my cousins, my brother, sister, and myself in East N.Y. Brooklyn. I remember when I loss my Grandfather, I was only 5. My Grandmother stayed a widow for the last 25 years of her life but she was never alone. She was a mother to 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. All but one survive her. She was a Grandmother to 38 of us and a Great-Grandmother to 47 (at last count).
A trip to P.R. for her funeral was not possible due to the financial burden it would bring so I decided I'd pay my respects when my already planned trip took place. I arrived late on a Wednesday night and first thing Thursday morning I took my family to visit her final resting place. It was so emotional for me to finally have my chance to kneel and let the tears out after holding them in for almost a month. It was the greatest feeling to be the first to fill the flower pots with roses and other flowers that she loved. I was the first relative from over here in the US to see the completed white marble tomb since it was being constructed during the weeks before I arrived. In a way, it gave me a sense of real honor to be first witness.
Now Grandma can finally be at peace and join my Grandfather and her eldest son, my uncle who passed away when I was 15. It will remain my tradition to visit P.R. every year and stay at her humble hillside home in the village she called home for about 50 years. She was religious and I have her favorite Bible to keep as my own personal reminder of her. As for the rest of my "vacation", I can't say it was 100% enjoyable but at least my kids loved it, again.
I think I'll lighten the mood by posting a link to my favorite photos taken in P.R. Thanks for taking the time to read this. For that last week in June I used art and this forum to keep my mind clear and relaxed, it does work. I know I'll be back to posting renderings very soon but for now, enjoy the pictures- http://www.directimagehost.com/pf.php?fid=7830
